Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

By 6:00 AM the next morning, the financial markets in New York had barely opened when the first tremors hit.

In the penthouse suite of the Vance family estate overlooking Central Park, patriarch Arthur Vance sat at the mahogany breakfast table, reading the Wall Street Journal while sipping black coffee. His daughter Cordelia sat across from him, still wearing a rumpled version of her red silk gown from the night before, complaining bitterly about her treatment at the Ashworth Grand.

"I demand that you sue that hotel, Daddy!" Cordelia whined, stabbing a fork into her scrambled eggs. "The manager locked me in a VIP lounge for three hours like a criminal! And some thug named Damien Cross threatened to ban me from every luxury establishment in the tri-state area!"

Arthur lowered his newspaper, his weathered face darkening with genuine concern. "Cordelia, did you say... Damien Cross?"

"Yes! Some arrogant brute with tattoos who thinks he owns—"

Before she could finish her sentence, the dining room double doors flew open. Julian and Marcus burst into the room, looking as though they hadn't slept a wink. Julian was holding a glowing tablet, his face ghostly pale.

"Father," Julian choked out, stopping at the edge of the table. "It's over."

Arthur frowned, setting his coffee cup down. "What are you talking about? Explain yourself clearly."

"Vance Global Logistics stock just plummeted forty-two percent in pre-market trading," Marcus blurted out, his voice shaking. "The federal maritime commission just seized our entire container fleet at the Port of Newark. They found illegal cargo manifests on three of our primary cargo ships."

Cordelia scoffed, crossing her arms. "So pay them off! That's what we always do! Call the district attorney, call the port authority—"

"We can't call anyone!" Julian shouted, slamming his hand down on the mahogany table so hard the china rattled. "The DA's office received a complete financial dossier from Cross Holdings at 4:00 AM this morning! They have warrants for tax fraud, corporate embezzlement, and racketeering! Every single bank account our family owns has been frozen by federal injunction!"

Arthur Vance stood up so fast his chair tipped over backward, crashing loudly against the Persian rug. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking suddenly fragile and old.

"Cross..." Arthur whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "Why would Damien Cross target us? We had a non-aggression pact. We split the import territories peacefully for five years."

Julian looked at his sister with a gaze full of unmitigated fury and disgust. "Because last night, at the Ashworth Grand, Cordelia decided to take out her bad mood on a pregnant hotel waitress. She shoved her into a mirror. And that waitress... was the only person Damien Cross has spent seven years trying to find to repay a life debt."

Cordelia’s mouth dropped open. She shrank back into her chair, the color draining from her cheeks as the terrifying reality of what she had done finally began to sink into her skull.

"A... a waitress?" Cordelia stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "You ruined our entire family empire over a waitress?"

"She saved his life," Julian said bitterly. "And you tried to destroy hers."

Before Cordelia could answer, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway outside the dining room. The double doors swung wide open, revealing Reeves and four armed federal marshals flanked by Damien Cross’s private security detail.

"Arthur Vance," the lead marshal stated coldly, stepping forward with an arrest warrant in his hand. "You and your family are under arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy, and corporate fraud. You have the right to remain silent..."
