Chapter 5 - The Reckoning in the Penthouse

Later that afternoon, back in the quiet sanctuary of the Ashworth Grand’s top-floor executive suite, the winter snow continued to fall softly against the reinforced glass windows.
Della Marsh sat propped up in a comfortable armchair, wrapped in a plush cashmere throw, sipping warm lemon tea. The lingering pain in her hip had faded to a dull ache, and the cut on her palm was neatly bandaged.
The door unlocked, and Damien entered, carrying a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box. He walked over and placed it gently on the coffee table beside her tea.
"How are you feeling?" Damien asked, sitting down in the opposite chair.
"Better," Della smiled softly, looking at him with a mixture of awe and lingering disbelief. "Though the news this morning was... a bit overwhelming. I saw the reports on the lobby television. The Vance family empire is completely gone. Their assets are seized, their executives are in federal custody, and Cordelia is facing criminal assault charges."
Damien leaned back, his gray eyes steady and calm. "They built an empire on exploitation and fear. It was bound to collapse the moment it met something unbreakable."
Della looked down at her hands, her fingers tracing the edge of the teacup. "You didn't have to dismantle an entire corporate dynasty just because of me, Damien."
"Yes, I did," he answered without a moment's hesitation. "Seven years ago, you walked into the fire to pull a stranger out of a burning car. You didn't ask who I was, you didn't care about the risk, and you didn't wait for a reward. You just did what was right."
He reached out and tapped the small velvet box on the table. "Open it."
Curious, Della picked up the box and lifted the lid. Inside rested a vintage, beautifully crafted gold pocket watch with an engraving on the inside cover: To the one who carries the light through the storm. D.C.
"What is this?" she whispered.
"It belonged to my grandfather," Damien said quietly. "He told me that when you find someone who possesses true courage, you keep them close, because people like that are rare in this world."
He looked at her with an intensity that made her breath catch, his voice softening into something entirely tender. "You've been carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, working double shifts, terrified for your baby's future. That ends today, Della. I've set up a fully funded trust for you and your child — housing, medical care, education, everything you will ever need. No strings attached. No debts to repay."

Tears welled up in Della’s eyes, spilling over her lashes, but this time they were tears of profound, unimaginable relief. "I... I don't know what to say. Thank you."
"Don't thank me," Damien smiled faintly, standing up and extending his hand toward her. "Just let me take care of you. For a change."
