Chapter 2 - The Diagnosis of the Dynasty

The private wing of the Mercy Crest Medical Center was a stark contrast to the dingy, claustrophobic rooms Claire had grown accustomed to on Baltic Avenue. Here, the floors were polished oak, the walls were painted a soothing sea-foam green, and the large windows looked out over the rolling, white-capped waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Claire lay in the center of the massive hospital bed, a clean white gown replacing her torn clothes. An intravenous line was hooked to the back of her hand, delivering fluids to her exhausted, dehydrated body. Beside her sat Luca, his jacket removed, his shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with muscle and marked by the old scars of a life lived in the shadows. He had been sitting there for three hours, silent, unmoving, a dark sentinel protecting her sleep.

A soft knock broke the quiet, and Dr. Evelyn Vance, a sharp, elegant woman with silver hair and the authoritative air of a premier OB-GYN, stepped into the room. She held a digital tablet in her hand, her expression serious but reassuring.

"How is she, Doctor?" Luca asked, standing up immediately, his voice carrying an anxious edge that his associates would have found shocking.

"She’s remarkably resilient, Luca," Dr. Vance said, walking over to the bedside and checking the monitor displaying the fetal heart rate. A steady, rapid thump-thump-thump filled the room—a beautiful, unhindered rhythm. "The ultrasound shows no placental abruption from the fall. The fetus is twelve weeks along, healthy, and showing strong cardiac activity. The baby survived the trauma."

Claire let out a long, shuddering breath, her hand automatically moving to her lower abdomen, a flood of intense relief washing over her pale features. "Thank God," she whispered. "Thank God."

"However," Dr. Vance continued, turning her gray eyes directly to Claire, her professional demeanor softening with genuine sympathy. "The physical toll on your body, Claire, is severe. You have two fractured ribs on your left side, extensive soft-tissue bruising across your back and shoulders, and your blood work indicates chronic malnutrition and high levels of cortisol. If you had stayed in that environment for another week, your body would have miscarried from sheer physical exhaustion."

She looked at Luca, her tone turning firm. "She needs absolute bed rest for the next month, Luca. No stress, no movement, and a strict nutritional regimen. Her body has spent two years in a state of fight-or-flight. We need to teach her nervous system how to feel safe again."

"She will have everything she needs, Evelyn," Luca stated flatly. "She isn't returning to Baltic Avenue. She’s going to the estate in Ventnor."

Dr. Vance nodded, offering Claire a warm, encouraging smile before exiting the room. The silence returned, but it was no longer heavy with fear; it was light, filled with the miraculous knowledge that the life inside her was safe.

Claire looked at Luca, her fingers nervously twisting the edge of the hospital sheet. "The estate in Ventnor... Luca, I can't pay for that. Grant took every dollar I saved from the Velvet Room. The bus ticket to Pittsburgh... it was all I had left."

Luca walked over to the bed, sitting back down in the vinyl chair. He reached out, his long fingers gently catching her chin, forcing her to look into his gray eyes.

"Listen to me, Claire," he said, his voice dropping into that quiet, absolute cadence that brooked no argument. "Grant Mercer’s debts to my organization are null and void, because I have seized every asset he owns, including his real estate licenses and his hidden accounts. But more importantly, you don't owe me a single cent. You are under my protection now. That means your only job is to eat, rest, and grow that baby. Let me handle the monsters."

Claire looked into his eyes—the same eyes that had looked at her with respect aboard the yacht when she was at her absolute lowest. For the first time in two years, the desperate, survival-driven instinct to run began to quiet down. She closed her eyes, letting her head fall back against the pillows, the steady, rhythmic thump-thump-thump of her baby's heart guiding her into a deep, dreamless sleep.
