Chapter 3 - The Threat from the Shadows

The Moretti estate in Ventnor was a magnificent fortress of gray stone and wrought iron, perched directly on the edge of the Atlantic cliffside. The windows were reinforced glass, the grounds were patrolled by quiet, armed men in dark suits, and the interior was filled with the warm, rich scent of beeswax, old books, and fresh ocean air.

For four weeks, Claire lived in a world that felt entirely detached from reality. She spent her days sitting on the sun porch, wrapped in heavy cashmere blankets, watching the waves crash against the rocks below. A private chef prepared meals designed to restore her health, and every evening, Luca would arrive after his business in the city was finished. He never pushed her, never demanded information, and never entered her bedroom without knocking. He would simply sit with her on the porch, reading the newspapers or speaking quietly about his childhood by the ocean.

But the peace of the Ventnor fortress was shattered on a Tuesday afternoon in late April.

Claire was walking down the long, portrait-lined corridor toward the library when she heard the heavy oak doors of Luca’s study swing open. The voices inside were loud, carrying a tense, vibrating energy that made her nursing-school instincts immediately alert.

"We have a problem, Boss," Nico’s voice carried through the hallway. "Detective Draper from the Atlantic City PD is downstairs at the main gate. He has a warrant for your arrest."

Claire froze, her breath catching in her throat as the name Draper struck her like a physical blow—the same crooked detective who had taken a white envelope from Grant two years ago while she sat bleeding behind the door.

"On what charges?" Luca’s voice was completely calm, devoid of any panic.

"Kidnapping and extortion," Nico replied, his tone grim. "Grant Mercer somehow managed to get a message out to Draper from the holding facility. He’s claiming you abducted his legal wife, forced him to sign over his real estate holdings under duress, and are holding her hostage here in Ventnor. Draper brought a full tactical unit with him. They’re claiming that if we don't hand Claire over to her lawful husband within an hour, they’re breaching the property."

Claire felt a cold, familiar dread slice through her chest. Grant wasn't letting go. He was using the very systems of authority he had bribed for years to drag her back into his cage. She took three frantic steps forward, pushing the study door open before she could stop herself.

"Luca, no," she gasped, her hands trembling as she looked at him. "Don't let them take me back. If I go back to Grant, he’ll kill me this time. He knows about the baby."

Luca stood up from his leather desk, his gray eyes turning into chips of ice as he looked at her pale face. He walked over to her, his large hands coming up to rest securely on her shoulders, his touch a solid, grounding weight.

"Look at me, Claire," he ordered softly. "Did I not tell you that you are safe here?"

"But the police—"

"Carl Draper isn't the police, Claire. He’s a stray dog that Grant Mercer fed with pocket change," Luca said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, clinical register that made the hair on the back of Nico’s neck stand up. "Nico, call Judge Harrison. Tell him I need a federal stay of execution on that local warrant within ten minutes. And tell Dominic to bring the ledger from the Velvet Room lounge. The ledger that contains the exact dates, times, and serial numbers of every payoff Detective Draper received over the last three years."

He turned back to Claire, his expression softening just a fraction. "Go back to the library, Claire. Have the chef make you some tea. I’m going down to the gate to settle a long-overdue account."
