Chapter 5 - The Rebirth of the Light

By September, the Jersey shore had transitioned into a beautiful, crisp autumn. The summer crowds had completely vanished from the boardwalk, leaving the white sand beaches wide, clean, and open beneath a brilliant blue sky.

Claire walked slowly along the shoreline just below the Ventnor estate, her bare feet sinking into the cool, wet sand. She was seven months pregnant now, her high, proud belly filling out the front of a soft cream wool sweater. Her skin had regained its healthy, vibrant color, her brown hair had grown long and glossy, and the old, terrified look in her gray-green eyes had been completely replaced by a peaceful, maternal serenity.

Walking right beside her was Luca, his trousers rolled up at the ankles, his leather shoes carried in one hand as he watched her with a quiet, protective devotion that had never wavered for a single day.

"Dr. Vance says the baby is perfectly positioned," Claire said softly, a warm smile touching her lips as she looked out over the ocean waves. "She thinks he’s going to be tall. Just like his father."

Luca stopped walking, his gray eyes turning to look at her with an emotion so deep it made his throat tighten. He reached out, his large, scarred hand resting gently over the curve of her stomach, his thumb tracing a slow, rhythmic circle over the fabric of her sweater.

"He’ll have your heart, Claire," Luca whispered, his voice dropping into that warm, intimate register she had grown to love. "The heart that survived the dark, the heart that kept fighting until the doors came down."

"Luca," Claire said, her hand coming up to rest over his. "Grant... the lawyers said the final decree came through this morning."

"It did," Luca nodded, his expression turning firm but peaceful. "The marriage was officially annulled by the state supreme court on the grounds of fraud and duress. Reverend Paul Colton was indicted last week for operating a fraudulent ministry scheme. You are no longer Claire Mercer. You are entirely free."

Claire let out a long, shuddering breath, a single tear of joy escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek. For two long years, she had felt like a ghost, a piece of property trapped in a nameless apartment on Baltic Avenue. But standing here on the open shore, with the ocean wind in her hair and the strongest man in the city holding her secure, she knew she had finally come back to life.

"I don't want to be Claire Bennett anymore either, Luca," she whispered, looking up into his gray eyes with an absolute, un-veiled honesty. "When he’s born... I want us to have the same name. All three of us."

Luca stared at her, the legendary composure of Atlantic City’s most feared man completely shattering as a brilliant, genuine smile broke across his rugged features—a smile his associates had never once seen in his entire thirty-six years of life. He pulled her gently into his arms, his chest a solid, unyielding sanctuary as he pressed his lips against her temple.

"Moretti," he murmured against her hair. "It’s a beautiful name for a family, Claire."
