Chapter 2 - The Predator’s ReturnThe silence that followed Victor Blackwood’s entrance was so absolute that the distant ticking of the grandfather clock in the study sounded like a drum roll of execution.

Serena’s foot slowly descended, hitting the marble with a soft, pathetic click. The confident, icy socialite who had threatened murder moments ago dissolved into a trembling, stammering wreck.

"V-Victor," Serena gasped, her voice pitching an octave higher as a desperate, fabricated smile plastered itself across her face. She rushed forward, her hands fluttering toward his coat lapels. "Oh, darling! You’re back early! We didn't expect you until tomorrow night! Oh, thank goodness you’re here—this wretched girl, this incompetent nanny—she dropped Ethan! I walked in just in time to catch him, but she attacked me, she—"

Victor did not flinch. He did not blink.

He didn't even look at her face. His dark, impenetrable eyes bypassed Serena entirely, locking onto Lily, who was cradling the pale, semi-conscious baby against her chest, and then dropping slowly to Ethan’s violently swollen, misshapen arm.

The air in the room grew so dense, so suffocatingly heavy, that Serena choked on her own words.

Victor took one step forward. Then another.

Each footfall of his leather shoes echoed off the high vaulted ceilings like a gavel coming down in a courtroom. His gaze swept over Lily’s torn blouse, the dark bruise blooming across her stomach where Serena’s heel had struck her, and the streaks of dried blood on her knees.

Then, he looked down at his son.

Ethan let out a tiny, pathetic whimper, his small fingers twitching against Lily’s shirt.

Victor’s face did not contort into rage. There were no shouts, no wild gestures. Instead, a terrifying, unnatural stillness settled over him. It was the calm before an apocalyptic storm—the exact look that had earned him the title of the most feared syndicate boss east of the Mississippi.

"Victor, please, listen to me," Serena babbled, her hands shaking as she tried to touch his arm. "The nanny was careless—"

"Shut your mouth," Victor said.

It wasn't a roar. It was a low, conversational whisper that carried more violence than a gunshot.

Serena recoiled as if she had been struck. "V-Victor?"

Victor ignored her completely. He knelt down onto the cold marble, ignoring the dust and the scattered glass. His massive, scarred hands—hands that had signed death warrants and dismantled rival empires—moved with startling, delicate precision as he reached out for his son.

"Lily," Victor murmured, his voice softening just a fraction as he looked into her tear-filled eyes. "Give him to me."

"His arm... Mr. Blackwood, it's broken," Lily whispered, her voice cracking as she carefully transferred the baby into his father's arms. "She... she dragged him. She dropped him."

Victor cradled Ethan against his broad chest. The baby, recognizing his father’s familiar scent and steady heartbeat, let out one last, ragged sob and buried his face in Victor's shirt.

Slowly, agonizingly, Victor stood up.

He turned his head toward Serena. The look in his obsidian eyes made the blonde woman take three stumbling steps backward until her spine hit the mahogany wall.

"You told me," Victor began, his voice dangerously smooth, "that you loved my son as your own. You told me that your gentle heart would be a safe harbor for him while I was gone."

"I do! I swear I do! That girl is lying! She’s trying to ruin us!" Serena screamed, tears springing to her eyes as she fought for a shred of control. "Look at her! She’s a street rat! She’s making it all up!"

Victor didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

"Marcus," Victor called out into the empty hallway.

Instantly, two massive men in dark suits materialized from the shadows of the arched doorway, their expressions carved from granite. Marcus, Victor’s head of security, stepped forward, his hand resting casually inside his jacket.

"Boss," Marcus said, his eyes flicking from the injured baby to Serena’s terrified face.

"Take Ms. Montigue down to the lower security wing," Victor commanded, his voice devoid of any human emotion. "Lock her in Cell Four. Confiscate her phone, her jewelry, and every designer dress she brought into this house. She doesn't exist anymore."

"No! You can't do this!" Serena shrieked, panic finally breaking through her aristocratic facade as Marcus and the other guard grabbed her arms, lifting her off her feet. "My father is a senator! You’ll pay for this, Victor! You hear me?! Let me go!"

Her screams echoed down the marble hallway, growing fainter as she was dragged away toward the subterranean depths of the mansion.

When the heavy iron basement door slammed shut below, the foyer fell back into a heavy, tense silence.

Victor turned back to Lily, who was still kneeling on the floor, trembling from shock and pain.

"Marcus," Victor ordered without looking back. "Call Dr. Vance. Have him fly in on the private chopper immediately. Tell him if my son’s arm isn't set within twenty minutes, I’ll strip his medical license across three states."

"Right away, Boss," Marcus replied, already pulling out his encrypted satellite phone.

Victor looked down at Lily, extending a large, steady hand toward her.

"Can you stand, Lily?" he asked, his voice low and intense.

Lily looked up at him, her heart pounding against her ribs. This was the monster of Chicago—the man mothers warned their children about, the shadow that haunted the boardrooms and docks. Yet, as she looked into his dark eyes, she saw no danger directed at her. Only a fierce, terrifying protectiveness.

She placed her trembling hand in his.

And with a single, effortless pull, Victor Blackwood hoisted her up from the cold marble, changing the trajectory of both their lives forever.
