Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary and the StormThe medical suite on the third floor of the Blackwood mansion looked more like a private hospital wing than a residential bedroom. Surgical lights hummed softly, casting a sterile white glow over the examining table where little Ethan, now sedated and resting comfortably with his arm in a temporary cast, slept peacefully.

Dr. Vance, a brilliant trauma surgeon who owed his life and practice to Victor Blackwood, packed up his instruments and turned to the syndicate boss.

"The bone fracture is clean, Mr. Blackwood, but it was subjected to severe, unnatural torque," Dr. Vance said cautiously, wiping his glasses with a sterile cloth. "Whoever pulled his arm did so with malicious intent. It wasn't an accidental fall."

Victor stood by the window, his back to the room, staring out into the dark, rain-swept pines of the estate. His broad shoulders were rigid under his shirt, the muscles bunching with suppressed fury.

"I know," Victor said quietly. "Is he going to have full mobility?"

"Yes. Given his age and rapid bone-healing capacity, he’ll make a full recovery. But he’s going to need physical therapy, and above all, absolute peace and emotional security." Dr. Vance packed his black leather bag and glanced toward the corner of the room. "What about the nanny? She took a severe blow to the abdomen. I prescribed muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatories, but she needs bed rest."

Victor turned around, his dark gaze shifting to the sofa in the corner where Lily sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a cup of lukewarm chamomile tea that a maid had brought her.

"Thank you, Doctor," Victor said. "Marcus will escort you out."

Once the heavy door clicked shut, the room fell into a heavy, contemplative quiet.

Victor walked slowly across the polished hardwood floor, stopping a few feet from Lily’s sofa. Up close, without the harsh strobe of the foyer lights, he looked exhausted. The lines around his eyes were carved deep by endless wars, betrayals, and the relentless paranoia required to survive at the top of the criminal hierarchy.

"You should be in bed, Lily," Victor said, his tone softening into something almost gentle. "Your abdomen is bruised. Vance said you have severe tissue trauma."

Lily clutched the warm ceramic mug with both hands, staring down at the amber liquid inside. "I couldn't leave Ethan. Not after... not when he was hurting."

"You risked your life for him," Victor said, pulling up a heavy leather armchair and sitting down opposite her. He rested his elbows on his knees, staring intently into her face. "Serena was wearing four-inch stilettos. She could have ruptured your spleen."

"I didn't think about that," Lily whispered honestly. "I only thought about him. If I had hesitated for even one second, his arm would have snapped completely. She... she hated him, Mr. Blackwood."

Victor’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.

"I know," Victor said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "I was a fool. I thought Serena was just cold, ambitious, high-society furniture. I thought she would play the part of a dutiful stepmother while I managed the business. I never imagined... I never allowed myself to believe anyone could look at an innocent child and wish him harm."

"Why did you trust her?" Lily asked softly, immediately regretting her boldness. "I'm sorry. It's not my place to—"

"No," Victor interrupted, holding up a large hand. "You have every right to ask. Five months ago, my inner circle was infiltrated. A rival syndicate tried to poison my water supply. Serena’s father—a corrupt federal judge—offered an alliance. He swore his daughter was pure, traditional, and maternal. It was a political arrangement. A cage for a cage."

Victor leaned back, rubbing his temples with his thumb and forefinger.

"And while I was fighting wars in New York, trusting that my fortress was impenetrable, the monster was already inside the gates," he muttered bitterly.

Lily looked at him, seeing past the tailored suits, the armed guards, and the terrifying reputation. She saw a grieving father who had lost his first wife in childbirth and had nearly lost his only son to the very person he had brought into his home for safety.

"She's gone, then?" Lily asked.

"Serena is currently sitting in a concrete box two floors beneath us," Victor said flatly. "Her father has already called my phone three times, threatening federal intervention, state troopers, and the National Guard."

"What are you going to do?"

Victor looked up, his obsidian eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying, absolute certainty.

"Judge Montigue can threaten whatever he likes. By morning, his entire offshore bank account will be frozen, his judicial corruption files will be dropped onto the desk of every independent journalist in Illinois, and he will resign before noon," Victor said softly. "As for Serena... she will be placed on a cargo freighter bound for a non-extradition country before sunrise. She will never set foot in Chicago again."

Lily shivered, not from cold, but from the sheer, chilling efficiency of the man. Yet, for the first time, that ruthlessness didn't frighten her. It felt like a shield.

"And me?" Lily asked, her voice barely a whisper. "Do you want me to leave, Mr. Blackwood? Now that the engagement is broken... do you need a new nanny?"

Victor stood up slowly, towering over her in the soft lamplight. He walked over to the crib where Ethan was sleeping, gently adjusting the white cotton blanket over the boy’s uninjured shoulder. Then, he turned back to Lily.

"Leave?" Victor repeated, a faint, humorless smile touching the corner of his mouth. "Lily, you are the only person in this entire cursed house who actually loves my son. If you leave, Ethan loses his mother a second time."

May you like

He walked back across the room, stopping directly in front of her. He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her forehead.

"Rest, Lily," Victor commanded quietly, his voice a low, rumbling caress. "Tomorrow, the storm hits. But inside these walls, you and Ethan are safe. I swear it on my life."
