Chapter 2 - THE SIEGE OF THE FAIRWEATHER VAULTUpstairs, the heavy oak study door groaned under the impact of a steel-toed boot. With a deafening splinter of wood and brass, the lock gave way, and three heavily armed mercenaries spilled into the room. They wore black balaclavas, tactical vests devoid of insignia, and carried suppressed submachine guns.

"Clear," grunted the leader, a scarred man with a cold, jagged tattoo peeking out from beneath his collar. He swept his weapon across the minimalist desk, kicking aside a stack of financial reports. "The safe is untouched, but the master terminal is still warm. They didn't have time to run far."
The second operative stepped closer to the bookshelf, running his gloved hand along the mahogany shelving. "Look at this displacement. There's a hydraulic seal behind the lower shelf."
"Found the rat hole," the leader sneered, tapping his comms link. "Boss, we've located the panic shelter. The target and the old woman are inside. We're breaching."
Down in the subterranean vault, Marcus heard the muffled sounds of thermal charges being placed against the hidden wall mechanism above. He looked at Mrs. Alvarez, who was whispering a quiet prayer while holding the baby, and then down at Daisy, who was sitting cross-legged on the reinforced floor, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees.
"Marcus," Mrs. Alvarez whispered, her voice trembling. "If they get in here..."
"They won't get the boy," Marcus interrupted, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, unbreakable finality. He walked over to a secure wall cabinet and popped the heavy biometric lock. Inside rested a sleek, black legal case containing a satellite uplink terminal that bypassed local cellular jammers, directly linked to a private maritime security fleet he owned in the Gulf of Mexico.
"Daisy," Marcus said, kneeling down beside the little girl. "I need you to be very brave for me."
Daisy looked up, her big brown eyes reflecting absolute courage. "I survived two weeks in a park with grandma sick in the hospital, Mr. Fairweather. I don't scare easy."
Marcus offered a grim, approving smile. He handed her the satellite device. "When I open the emergency hatch, I want you and Mrs. Alvarez to take my son through the escape tunnel that leads down to the old drainage culvert by the river. A transport team from my maritime fleet is stationed two miles downriver. Show them this device, and they'll get you out of the city."
"And you?" Mrs. Alvarez asked sharply, stepping forward. "Marcus, you can't hold them off by yourself."
"I built this empire, and I built this house," Marcus said, standing up and racking the slide of a heavy tactical shotgun he pulled from the vault's armory. "Julian thought he could steal my legacy and destroy my life. These thugs think they can walk into my home and take my son. It stops here."
Before Mrs. Alvarez could argue, a blinding flash of light filled the upper stairwell, followed by a concussive BOOM that shook dust from the ceiling of the panic room. The thermal charge had blown the manual release of the hidden door.
Heavy steel groaned as the wall mechanism gave way, and thick, acrid smoke began pouring down the staircase into the vault.
"Go! Now!" Marcus roared, shoving Mrs. Alvarez toward the low emergency exit tunnel at the back of the vault.
"Mr. Fairweather!" Daisy cried out, looking back as Mrs. Alvarez pulled her into the dark tunnel.

"Move!" Marcus commanded.
He spun around, leveling his shotgun toward the smoking, ruined entrance of the panic room as the first masked mercenary stepped through the threshold, rifle raised.
