Chapter 3 - SMOKE AND SHADOWSThe first mercenary stepped through the swirling gray smoke, his assault rifle sweeping downward to acquire targets inside the vault. Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger, sending a deafening roar echoing through the confined concrete space. The buckshot caught the intruder square in the tactical vest, sending him crashing backward against the stone stairs.

"Contact! Down in the vault!" the leader yelled from the upper corridor, firing a blind burst of suppressive fire down the stairs. Sparks showered off the reinforced steel walls, and the acrid smell of cordite filled the air.
Marcus ducked behind a heavy steel workbench, his heart pounding against his ribs. He checked his ammunition—four shells left in the tube. Against a four-man professional strike team equipped with night vision and body armor, brute force wouldn't be enough. He needed to turn the labyrinthine architecture of his own mansion against them.
He glanced toward the rear escape tunnel. Mrs. Alvarez and Daisy were already deep inside the drainage culvert, safely away from the immediate blast zone. His son was safe for the moment. Now, it was time to hunt.
Marcus dropped his heavy shotgun, pulled a suppressed tactical pistol from his belt, and slipped silently into the dark ventilation access shaft adjacent to the vault—a narrow maintenance tunnel he had installed years ago to monitor the estate's structural integrity.
Above him, three mercenaries dropped into the smoke-filled vault, weapons raised, scanning the empty room.
"Clear the corners!" the scarred leader ordered, stepping over his fallen comrade. "He's gone into the maintenance tunnels. Find him! And check that rear tunnel—make sure the kid didn't get out!"
Two of the operatives rushed toward the low emergency exit at the back of the vault, shining high-powered tactical flashlights down the dark concrete pipe.
"Boss, the tunnel splits twenty yards out," one of them called back over the radio link. "We need thermal gear to track footprints."
"Move fast!" the leader barked.
As the two operatives advanced down the drainage pipe, the overhead utility lights in the tunnel suddenly flickered and died, plunging the concrete tube into absolute darkness.
"What the—?" one operative muttered, tapping his helmet-mounted night-vision goggles.
Before he could adjust the settings, a heavy steel maintenance hatch dropped shut behind them with a resounding clang, locking automatically via the master control panel Marcus had triggered from his smartphone inside the ventilation shaft.
"Trap! We're locked in!"
Inside the main vault, the leader and the remaining operative spun around, realizing they had been split up.
"Hicks! Report!" the leader shouted into his comms.
Static hissed in response.

From the shadows of the ceiling rafters, a dark figure dropped silently behind the remaining operative. Before the man could turn, Marcus slammed the heavy butt of his pistol against the back of the mercenary's helmet, sending him crashing unconscious to the floor.
The leader whirled around, raising his assault rifle, but Marcus was already gone, melting back into the shadows of the smoke-filled corridors as the automated fire-suppression sprinklers hissed to life overhead, drenching the entire subterranean level in freezing water.
