Chapter 4 - THE WEB UNRAVELSUpstairs in the grand study, the rain outside began to lash furiously against the shattered windows, matching the storm brewing within the estate. Marcus stepped out of the hidden wall panel behind the ruined bookshelf, drenched, bleeding slightly from a graze on his left shoulder, but moving with cold, methodical precision.

He walked over to the shattered desk where the mercenaries had dropped a secure military-grade laptop during their hurried entry. The screen was still glowing, displaying an open satellite link routed through an encrypted proxy server in Zurich.

Marcus sat down in his leather chair, ignoring the shattered glass crunching beneath his shoes. His fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing the proxy firewall with a series of master root commands he had coded himself years ago when he first built his security empire.

The screen flickered, displaying a live decryption of the incoming data packets.

Rows of financial transactions, encrypted email threads, and audio transcripts scrolled across the monitor. Marcus read the names, and his breath caught in his throat.

It wasn't just Julian.

Julian had been a pawn. The master coordinator behind the entire scheme—the illegal genetic harvesting, the surrogate manipulation, the coordinated corporate sabotage, and the assassination attempt tonight—was none other than Richard Sterling, Marcus’s longtime chief operating officer and vice chairman of Fairweather Industries.

A folder popped up on the screen: a recorded phone conversation between Sterling and the leader of the mercenaries, timestamped just three hours ago.

“Make it look like a tragic break-in,” Sterling’s familiar, cold voice echoed from the laptop speakers. “Once Marcus is dead and the infant is eliminated, the board will vote me in as interim CEO under emergency succession clauses. The entire conglomerate falls into my lap.”

Marcus stared at the screen, a chilling numbness washing over him. Sterling had been by his side for twenty years. He had trusted him with his business, his secrets, and his life.

Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone in Marcus’s pocket buzzed violently. It was a secure call routed directly from the maritime extraction team downriver.

Marcus swiped the screen and pressed it to his ear. "Report."

"Mr. Fairweather," the voice of Captain Vance of the maritime security unit came through clearly over the static. "We have Mrs. Alvarez, the little girl, and your son safely onboard the cutter. They are unharmed. We also intercepted a secondary transmission leaving the estate's perimeter—a satellite phone ping originating from a private hangar at Teterboro Airport. It's coming from Sterling’s private jet."

Marcus stood up slowly, his grey eyes flashing with an icy, terrifying resolve. "He's running."

"Shall we scramble interceptors, sir?"

"No," Marcus said, his voice deadly calm. "Let him fly. I'm going to meet him there."
