Chapter 1 - The Silver Tray and the Shadow Protocol

The glare off the polished silver tray hit the lead assassin square in the eyes.

It was a split-second window—a flash of brilliant, concentrated light that made the man instinctively flinch, his hand hesitating over the heavy leather holster concealed inside his tailored navy blazer.

That fraction of a second was all Anika Rao needed.

She didn't scream. She didn't drop the tray.

Anika was twenty-two years old, standing barely five-foot-four in her oversized, stiff black waitress uniform. To the two hundred billionaires, politicians, and socialites filling the grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel, she was a ghost in cheap shoes—a nameless girl hired off a temp agency app for sixteen dollars an hour.

None of them knew that before her brother, Leo, was struck down on a rain-slicked highway seven weeks ago, Anika had spent three years training under former Special Forces operatives at the Blackwood Defensive Academy, supporting her family as a competitive hand-to-hand tactical athlete.

She moved with terrifying, fluid speed.

Anika stepped inside the lead man's guard before his hand could clear his lapel. She drove the thin, sharp edge of the silver serving tray directly into the side of his neck, hitting the carotid artery.

The man let out a choked gasp, his eyes rolling back as his nervous system buckled under the mechanical shock.

Before his knees could hit the parquet floor, Anika spun on her heel, catching his falling body with her left shoulder while simultaneously reaching into his jacket with her right hand. With a practiced, lightning-fast slide, she disarmed him—snapping his suppressed 9mm Sig Sauer out of its holster before his fingers could even register the loss.

THUD.

The lead man collapsed onto the floor, completely unconscious.

The ballroom didn't panic yet. To the champagne-sipping crowd ten feet away, it looked like a careless server slipping into a clumsy security guard. The woman in the silver silk dress who had poured champagne down Anika’s back let out another high-pitched, mocking laugh.

"Look at her," the woman sneered to her husband. "They're hirelings! Can't even carry a drink without falling over themselves."

Across the circle, billionaire Adrian Vale didn't laugh.

Adrian was thirty-one, built like an Olympic rower beneath his charcoal bespoke tuxedo. His piercing steel-blue eyes—famous across wall street for their icy, unreadable calm—shifted from the unconscious guard on the floor to the quiet waitress standing over him.

He saw the suppressed pistol tucked reverse-grip beneath her forearm. He saw the tactical footwork she used to balance her weight.

And he saw the six dark blue woven leather cuffs on the wrists of the remaining five security guards surrounding him.

"Adrian," the second assassin growled into his earpiece, realizing the lead man was down. "Execute the package! NOW!"

The remaining five men reached under their coats simultaneously.

"Down!" Anika barked at Adrian.

Adrian didn't hesitate. Recognizing a trained operative when he saw one, the billionaire ducked low, sweeping his long leg outward to kick the knees out from the assassin nearest to his left.

Anika surged forward like a coiled spring.

She didn't use the gun to shoot. A gunshot would cause a human stampede, trapping them in the ballroom. Instead, she used the pistol's heavy steel slide as an impact weapon.

WHACK!

She struck the second assassin across the temple with the butt of the Sig Sauer. Blood sprayed across the white linen tablecloth behind him as he dropped like a stone.

The third assassin lunged at her, drawing a tactical combat knife from his belt. The blade flashed under the crystal chandeliers, whistling through the air in a lethal arc aimed at her chest.

Anika sidestepped the blade by millimeters. The sharp steel tore through the fabric of her black server vest, but she didn't flinch. She grabbed the assassin's wrist, applied a twisting hammerlock leverage point, and shattered his elbow over her knee with a sickening CRACK!

The man shrieked in agony, dropping the knife. Anika slammed her palm upward into his nose, driving his head back into the marble pillar behind him.

Three down.

Three seconds had passed.

Now the remaining three assassins panicked. Realizing their quiet assassination attempt had turned into a brutal melee, two of them drew their firearms openly, aiming directly at Adrian Vale’s chest.

"Move!" Adrian roared.

He grabbed a heavy solid-oak dining chair and threw it across the gap, smashing it into the fourth assassin's chest just as the man pulled his trigger.

THWIP!

The suppressed gunshot sounded like a quiet, metallic cough. The bullet shattered a six-thousand-dollar crystal swan sculpture on the dessert table behind them, sending shards of glass flying like shrapnel through the air.

The ballroom exploded into pure, unadulterated chaos.

Screams tore through the air. The woman in silver silk shrieked hysterically as three oil executives knocked her over trying to reach the emergency exits. Glasses shattered, tables turned over, and the high-society crowd stampeded toward the main doors in a wild wave of terror.

Amidst the screaming horde, the fifth assassin raised his weapon, aiming straight for the back of Adrian's head as the billionaire turned to cover a fleeing elderly couple.

Anika didn't have time to bridge the ten-foot distance.

She snapped her wrist, tossing the heavy silver serving tray like a spinning razor blade across the room.

CLANG!

The edge of the metal tray smashed directly into the fifth assassin's wrist. His gun flew out of his hand, spinning across the floor.

Anika closed the gap in three bounding strides. She leaped off the edge of a mahogany service cart, driving her knees directly into the fifth assassin's chest. The impact carried both of them through a glass display case, smashing through mahogany and glass before landing on the marble floor.

She rolled instantly, coming to her feet in a low tactical stance.

The sixth and final assassin—a tall, scar-faced man with the blue woven cuff on his left wrist—grabbed Adrian Vale from behind in a rear chokehold, pressing a small silver hypodermic needle directly against the billionaire's throat.

"Don't move, girl!" the scar-faced man roared over the screaming crowd. "One twitch, and I inject ten milligrams of potassium chloride into his carotid! He'll be dead of cardiac arrest before his body hits the carpet!"

Anika froze five feet away. Her breathing was steady, her gray eyes dark and lethal, her black server outfit torn at the shoulder, revealing bruised, toned skin beneath.

Adrian was pinned against the assassin's chest. The sharp tip of the hypodermic needle pressed into his skin, a tiny bead of clear liquid glinting at the tip. Yet, despite the lethality of the moment, Adrian’s face remained completely calm.

He looked past the syringe, staring directly into Anika's eyes.

"You're not a waitress," Adrian said, his voice smooth, deep, and devoid of fear.

"I am tonight," Anika replied quietly, her eyes tracking the assassin's weight distribution.

"Shoot him," Adrian commanded softly.

"He's using you as a human shield," Anika whispered. "If I miss by a millimeter—"

"You won't miss," Adrian said, his steel-blue eyes locking onto hers with an insane, absolute level of trust. "Take the shot."

The scar-faced assassin sneered, tightening his grip on Adrian's neck. "Shut up! Both of you! Drop the weapon, girl, or I—"

BANG!

Anika didn't hesitate.

She fired a single round from her captured pistol.

The bullet did not hit Adrian. It did not even hit the assassin's torso.

The 9mm round passed two millimeters above Adrian's left ear, striking the assassin's exposed right shoulder joint with surgical, impossible precision.

The force of the kinetic impact shattered the assassin's deltoid muscle, severing the nerve cluster in his arm. His right hand instantly lost all motor function. The silver hypodermic needle slipped from his paralyzed fingers, bouncing harmlessly onto the carpet.

Adrian instantly slammed his elbow backward into the man's exposed ribs, breaking two bones, before spinning around and landing a vicious right hook directly across the assassin's jaw.

CRACK!

The scar-faced man hit the floor, unconscious, his nose crooked and bleeding profusely onto his blue woven leather cuff.

Silence fell over the ruined ballroom.

The six elite assassins lay scattered across the marble floor—unconscious, broken, or bleeding. The panicked crowd had fled into the hotel lobby, leaving behind broken glass, overturned tables, and abandoned silk purses.

Anika lowered her weapon, engaging the safety lever with a quick flick of her thumb. Her heart was pounding like a war drum against her ribs, but her hands remained steady.

Adrian Vale adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke tuxedo jacket. He pulled a white silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and wiped a drop of red wine off his lapel, his eyes never leaving the young woman in the ruined server uniform.

He walked over to her, stopping three feet away.

"Who taught you to shoot like that?" Adrian asked, his voice low, magnetic, and intense.

"Blackwood Tactical," Anika answered, wiping a smudge of grease off her cheek. "Three years."

Adrian looked at the six blue woven leather cuffs on the floor, then looked back at her face. "You didn't step in to save me because you're a good citizen. You recognized those cuffs."

Anika’s jaw tightened. Her gray eyes flashed with a raw, agonizing pain that made Adrian’s chest tighten unexpectedly.

"Seven weeks ago," Anika whispered, her voice trembling slightly for the first time, "a black SUV ran my nineteen-year-old brother off the road on Route 9. The driver wore that exact blue leather cuff on his wrist. My brother is lying in a coma at St. Jude's with a shattered spine because of those men."

She stepped closer to the scar-faced assassin lying at their feet. She reached down, grabbed his left wrist, and violently ripped the dark blue woven leather cuff off his arm.

She flipped the leather band over.

Stamped into the silver inner clasp of the leather cuff was a crest—a roaring silver lion encircled by two crossed daggers, accompanied by a serial number: V-FAMILY-PRIVATE-04.

Adrian stared at the crest.

The color drained from his face. The unshakeable, icy composure that had survived six armed hitmen suddenly crumbled, replaced by a dark, terrifying disbelief.

"No..." Adrian whispered.

Anika looked up at him, her eyes burning like white-hot iron.

"You know this crest," Anika said, her voice dropping into a lethal register. "Tell me whose family crest this is, Vale. Tell me who paid these men to hit my brother and put a bullet in your head tonight."

Adrian swallowed hard, his dark gray eyes looking down at the silver lion.

"It’s mine," Adrian said quietly. "It’s the private crest of the Vale family trust."

He met her gaze, his expression turning cold as winter.

"And there are only three people in the world who hold the keys to that security ledger."

Anika stepped closer, her hand gripping the captured pistol. "Who?"

"My stepmother, Victoria," Adrian whispered. "My half-brother, Julian..."

He paused, his voice faltering slightly.

"...and my own father."
