Chapter 2 - The Contract at St. Jude's

The rain outside the Grand Regent Hotel fell in heavy, freezing sheets.

Ten minutes after the ballroom fight, six unmarked black SUVs with tinted windows pulled up to the side exit of the hotel. Marcus Vance—Adrian's private head of personal security—flooded the hallway with twelve heavy tactical guards armed with automatic carbines.

"The room is secured, Mr. Vale," Marcus reported, his face grave as he looked at the six unconscious hitmen being zip-tied by his team. "Local police have been redirected by our legal department. The media is being told this was a kitchen gas explosion."

Marcus turned his sharp eyes toward Anika, who was sitting on a stainless steel prep table in the kitchen, wrapping a roll of white athletic tape tightly around her cut shoulder.

"Who is she?" Marcus asked in a low whisper, his hand resting near his sidearm.

"She’s the reason I’m still breathing, Marcus," Adrian said, stepping between Marcus and Anika. "And she’s coming with us."

Anika didn't look up from her bandaging. "I’m not going anywhere with you, Vale. I’m going to the hospital."

"Your brother’s name is Leo Rao," Adrian said softly, reading off a secure tablet Marcus had handed him. "He's in ICU Bed 4 at St. Jude’s Memorial. His medical bills are sitting at eighty-four thousand dollars, and the hospital administration issued a final collection notice four hours ago."

Anika’s hand froze over the athletic tape. She raised her pale, furious face. "Did your security team background-check me in five minutes?"

"In three minutes," Adrian corrected her gently. "And if my stepmother sent six private Vale mercenaries to eliminate me tonight, she already knows you survived the ballroom. Which means she knows who you are."

Anika stood up instantly, her eyes wide with sudden, sickening realization. "Leo."

"They'll target the hospital to clean up the loose ends," Adrian said, grabbing his dark cashmere overcoat from a chair and draping it over her shivering shoulders. "My private helicopter is on the roof. We have four minutes before her team hits that ICU ward."

Anika didn't ask another question. She grabbed her captured Sig Sauer, racked the slide, and followed Adrian toward the roof express elevator.

The storm lashed against the blades of the Eurocopter EC135 as it cut through the low-hanging clouds over downtown Baltimore.

Inside the cabin, the noise of the twin engines was reduced to a low, heavy thrum. Anika sat across from Adrian, wearing his dark cashmere coat over her torn waitress uniform. The coat smelled faintly of cedar, expensive sandalwood, and rain.

Adrian was reviewing a encrypted file on his laptop. The bright blue light illuminated the sharp, masculine angles of his profile.

"Explain the blue cuffs," Anika demanded over the tactical headset, her voice cutting through the thrum of the rotors.

Adrian didn't look up from the screen. "Twenty years ago, my father established the Vale Family Private Reserve—a black-budget security fund managed entirely outside our public corporation. It was meant to protect our global assets, shipping lines, and family members from international threats."

He zoomed in on a document displaying six digital signatures.

"Each mercenary hired through the Reserve is issued a numbered blue leather cuff containing an encrypted GPS locator and a dead-man's biometric trigger," Adrian continued softly. "The only person who can activate an elimination contract using Reserve operatives is someone holding a Tier-1 Master Key."

"And who holds those keys?" Anika asked.

"My father, Charles Vale, who has been in a coma at our estate for six months following a sudden stroke," Adrian said, his steel-blue eyes darkening. "My stepmother, Victoria Vale, who serves as the chairman of our charitable foundation... and my half-brother, Julian, who handles our offshore acquisitions."

"So your stepmother and brother tried to kill you to take full control of the Vale empire," Anika said bitterly. "And my brother was run over seven weeks ago because he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."

"Or," Adrian said, turning the laptop screen toward her, "because your brother wasn't hit by accident."

Anika froze. "What?"

Adrian clicked a video file.

It was grain-filtered, dark footage from a highway traffic camera on Route 9, dated seven weeks ago at 11:42 PM.

On the screen, a small red motorcycle—Leo’s bike—was driving at forty miles per hour down the right lane. Behind it, a massive black armored SUV accelerated suddenly, intentionally swerving into the bike, smashing Leo’s body across the metal guardrail before speeding off into the dark.

"It wasn't a hit-and-run," Anika gasped, her hand clutching the edge of her seat, tears welling up in her gray eyes. "It was an attempted execution!"

"Look at what Leo was carrying on his backpack," Adrian instructed, zooming in on the freeze-frame.

Tucked into the side pocket of Leo’s leather jacket was a yellow courier envelope stamped with a confidential corporate seal: VALE BIOTECH – PROJECT ELYSIUM.

"Leo was working as a night-shift courier for a legal courier firm," Anika whispered, her mind racing. "He was delivering a package that night!"

"He was delivering the private autopsy and toxicology reports for my father," Adrian revealed, his voice dropping into a dark, terrifying register. "Reports that proved my father didn't suffer a natural stroke six months ago... he was systematically poisoned with micro-doses of thallium."

Anika stared at him in utter horror.

"Your brother intercepted the murder weapon, Anika," Adrian said softly, reaching across the gap to rest his hand gently over her cold, trembling fingers. "Julian and Victoria didn't just hit him to hide a secret. They hit him because he possessed the only physical evidence that could put them behind bars for treason and attempted murder."

The tactical headset beeped twice.

"Sir," the helicopter pilot announced. "We are thirty seconds out from St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital. Local power grid in Sector 4 just suffered a blackout."

Adrian’s grip on Anika’s hand tightened instantly.

He looked out the helicopter window. Down below, the massive fifteen-story hospital complex was swallowed in pitch black darkness, its emergency generators flickering faintly in the freezing rain.

"They're already inside," Anika said, her fear instantly vanishing, replaced by a cold, white-hot fury.

She racked the slide of her gun, her gray eyes locking onto Adrian’s with absolute, lethal intent.

"If anyone touches my brother tonight, Adrian... I’m burning your family's empire to the ground."

"I'll bring the matches," Adrian answered quietly.
