Chapter 1 - The Shadow on the ScreenThe rhythmic, high-pitched crying of three-day-old Leo vibrated through the cold air of the private maternity room.

Claire sat on the edge of the high hospital bed, her knees trembling beneath her cotton gown. She cradled her baby boy with one arm, pressing his tiny, warm body against her chest, while her opposite hand gripped her smartphone.

The screen glowed ominously in the dim afternoon light:

Good. Now he thinks you hate her. Soon, you’ll be the one he sends away.

Her thumb hovered over the screen. Her heart beat with a sickening, ragged thud against her ribs.

"Who are you?" Claire typed back, her fingers shaking so violently she mistyped the four letters twice before hitting send.

The response was instant, popping up in a gray bubble before her text could even process:

I’m the person who knows that Sophie isn't Daniel’s only secret.

Claire gasped, pulling the phone closer. She stared at the unknown number—a local area code, masked through a virtual routing service.

Outside in the carpeted corridor, the heavy timber door creaked open.

Daniel walked back into the room. His face was set in a hard, unyielding line, his knuckles white where he held a paper cup of water. Behind him, the hallway was quiet; Linda had taken a crying Sophie down to the hospital gift shop to calm her down.

"Sophie is crying so hard she's hyperventilating in the elevator, Claire," Daniel said, his voice flat, devoid of the warmth he had showered her with throughout her nine months of pregnancy. He set the water cup down on the tray table with a sharp thud. "My mother is taking her home."

"Daniel," Claire whispered, her voice raspy. She held her phone out toward him. "Look at this. Please. You have to look at this."

Daniel didn't reach for the device. He crossed his arms over his chest, looking down at her with a mixture of profound disappointment and cold distance.

"I don't want to look at your phone, Claire," Daniel said coldly. "I don't care what parenting blog or postpartum anxiety forum you're reading that has you acting like this. You humiliated a seven-year-old child who spent six months decorating that nursery with you."

"It isn't a blog!" Claire cried, tears finally breaking past her lashes and spilling down her cheeks. "Someone is texting me, Daniel! They've been texting me for a week! They knew what dress Sophie was wearing! They knew she was going to touch Leo's hand first!"

Daniel frowned, but his posture remained rigid. "What are you talking about?"

"Read it!" Claire sobbed, thrusting the phone into his hand. "Read the texts!"

Daniel took the phone with an irritated sigh. He scrolled up through the thread.

As his eyes scanned the messages—the precise descriptions of Sophie’s yellow dress, the warnings about the baby disappearing, the malicious threats—his face shifted. The angry red flush on his neck drained away, leaving him strikingly pale.

"Where... where did these come from?" Daniel asked, his voice losing its confrontational edge.

"I don't know!" Claire said, rocking baby Leo as the infant settled into a soft, fitful sleep. "They started six days ago. I thought... I thought it was just a sick prank. I tried to block the number, but every message came from a different generated line. Then today... when Sophie walked through that door wearing that exact yellow dress with the white daisy on the collar... I panicked, Daniel. The text said: Let Sophie hold the baby. That’s how we’ll take him. I thought someone was using her as a distraction to grab Leo!"

Daniel stared at the dark screen, his thumb tracing the bevel of the phone. He looked at the message string again, his jaw clenching tightly.

"Who else knew Sophie was wearing that dress today?" Claire asked, looking into her husband's eyes.

Daniel hesitated. "Nobody. Linda bought it for her yesterday afternoon at the mall."

"Linda bought it?" Claire repeated, her breath catching in her throat.

"Yes," Daniel said defensively, taking a step back. "My mother took her shopping yesterday so she would have a nice outfit for her first photo with her baby brother. Are you implying my mother sent these?"

"I'm not implying anything, Daniel!" Claire pleaded. "I'm telling you that whoever sent these messages is standing right inside our inner circle! They knew the exact minute Linda and Sophie stepped off the elevator!"

Daniel ran a hand over his face, pacing toward the window overlooking the hospital parking structure. "This... this is insane. Why would anyone do this?"

Before Claire could answer, her phone vibrated in Daniel’s grip.

A new text message flashed across the top of the display:

Ask your husband where he was on Thursday night at 11:00 PM. Ask him who resides at 414 Crestview Lane.

Claire watched Daniel's face as he read the screen.

The change was instantaneous.

The color didn't just leave Daniel's skin—it was as if his entire body turned to ash. He almost dropped the phone onto the linoleum floor, his fingers twitching as he stared at the address printed in bold black text.

"Daniel?" Claire asked, her heart dropping into a cold, bottomless pit. "What is 414 Crestview Lane?"

Daniel closed his eyes, his chest heaving as he drew a shuddering breath. He didn't look at her.

"Daniel," Claire demanded, her voice dropping into a dangerous, deadly whisper. "Look at me and tell me what that address is."

"It's... it's nothing," Daniel stammered, his polished, confident demeanor shattering completely. "It's an old real estate matter for the firm."

"You're lying," Claire said, her tears instantly drying into a cold, terrifying clarity. "You're lying to me while our newborn son is sitting in my arms."

The door to the room swung open again.

Nurse Sarah walked in holding a clipboard, followed by a tall, broad-shouldered hospital security guard wearing a dark navy uniform.

"Mrs. Miller?" Nurse Sarah asked gently, looking between Claire's tear-streaked face and Daniel's frozen posture. "The front desk logged a disturbance call from this room earlier. And... we just received an anonymous call at the nursing station claiming that an unauthorized individual is attempting to interfere with your infant's medical chart."

Daniel spun around toward the guard. "There is no interference here. My wife is just exhausted."

"Actually," Claire said, her voice ringing clear and strong across the room as she looked straight at the security guard, "I need you to secure this room. Someone is stalking my family, and my husband is keeping secrets."
