Chapter 3 - The Trap in the NurseryThe next morning broke gray and cold over the city.

By 9:00 AM, the atmosphere inside Room 512 was tight, quiet, and razor-sharp.
Claire sat upright in an armchair near the window, wearing dark slacks and a clean sweater. Baby Leo was swaddled tightly in her arms, fed, warm, and peaceful.
Beside her stood Daniel. He hadn't slept a single minute. He wore a dark suit, his tie pulled slightly loose at the collar, his jaw set like granite. Over the past twelve hours, the quiet, passive man who tried to keep peace with his overbearing mother had vanished. In his eyes was a cold, lethal determination.
Beside the door stood Detective Torres and two plainclothes officers from the precinct.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
The handle turned, and Linda Miller stepped into the room.
She looked immaculate, as she always did—wearing a tailored navy coat, her gray hair styled in a perfect blowout, carrying a large leather handbag and a box of fresh pastries from the downtown bakery. Behind her stepped a tall, sharp-featured man in a grey suit carrying a leather briefcase—her attorney, Arthur Vance.
"Good morning, darlings," Linda said smoothly, her voice dripping with artificial, motherly warmth. "I brought some breakfast. I thought... after the unfortunate scene yesterday, we could all take a deep breath and start over."
She paused, noticing the cold, silent atmosphere in the room. Her eyes flicked toward Detective Torres standing quietly near the bathroom door.
"Daniel?" Linda asked, setting the pastry box on the counter. "Who is this woman?"
"That's Detective Torres, Mom," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stepped between his mother and Claire's chair. "She's here to investigate a cyber-stalking and harassment case."
Linda’s smile twitched slightly, but her composure remained remarkably solid. "Harassment? Oh, dear. Is someone bothering you, Claire? Postpartum stress can make people very paranoid, you know..."
"Stop talking, Linda," Claire said, her voice dropping like a heavy iron blade.
Linda blinked, offended. "Excuse me?"
"Arthur," Daniel turned to his mother's lawyer, his voice sharp and authoritative. "I suggest you advise your client to take a seat before the grand jury indicts her for conspiracy and obstruction of justice."
Arthur Vance frowned, looking at Linda with sudden concern. "Linda... what is he talking about?"
"He's talking about 414 Crestview Lane, Arthur," Daniel revealed, pulling a thick stack of printed financial documents from his pocket and throwing them onto the table. "He's talking about the twenty-five thousand dollars my mother transferred from her personal account to Victoria Vance last month."
Linda’s eyes flared with a brief, terrifying flash of anger before she smoothed her expression back into a cool mask.
"I helped Victoria because she was sick, Daniel," Linda said smoothly. "Her family abandoned her. I was merely being charitable."
"You weren't being charitable, Mom," Daniel spat, taking a step toward her, his chest heaving. "You bought Victoria's old phone records. You hired her to send malicious texts to my wife using private details only you knew! You bought Sophie that yellow dress yesterday morning, texted Claire the exact description from a burner phone, and then pushed my seven-year-old daughter into that room so Claire would react out of fear!"
Linda stood tall, refusing to back down. "Claire reacted like a lunatic! She shoved a little girl’s hand away! She screamed at her!"
"Because she thought someone was trying to steal her baby!" Daniel roared, his voice echoing off the hospital walls so loudly that baby Leo stirred in Claire's arms. "Because you made her think that!"
Arthur Vance looked at the financial documents on the table, then at Detective Torres's police badge. He slowly took a step back from Linda, putting distance between himself and his client. "Linda... if these bank transfers are linked to a cyber-harassment campaign targeting a post-operative maternal patient, I cannot represent you in this matter."
"Arthur! Sit down!" Linda snapped, her sweet, grandmotherly persona completely evaporating into cold, aristocratic rage.
She turned her venomous gaze toward Claire.
"You took my son away from me," Linda sneered, her voice laced with pure, toxic hatred. "For four years, you've kept him away from my social circle. You made him move thirty miles out into the suburbs. You ruined his career prospects at the firm! He was supposed to marry Victoria—a woman of class, a woman from our world! Not some middle-class schoolteacher with no family name!"
"And Sophie?" Claire asked softly, her eyes blazing with quiet, powerful anger. "What about Sophie, Linda? You used an eight-year-old child's heart as collateral damage just to get back at me?"
"Sophie belongs with me!" Linda shouted, her face turning dark red. "I raised her for the first two years after Daniel's first wife died! You are an outsider, Claire! You don't belong in this family! And I will not let you raise my grandson!"
"She isn't raising him alone, Mom," Daniel said, stepping directly in front of his mother, looking down at her with pure disgust. "She's raising him with me. And as of this second, you are dead to this family."
"You can't cut me off!" Linda yelled, taking a step toward Daniel. "I filed an emergency custody order this morning! The judge will see Claire's behavior yesterday—"
"The judge has already seen the evidence, Mrs. Miller," Detective Torres interrupted smoothly, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs. "Including the forensic extraction from Victoria's phone, which detailed your explicit instructions to manipulate scene optics at the hospital today."
Torres grabbed Linda's wrist, snapping the cold steel around her manicured joint.
"Linda Miller, you are under arrest for felony cyber-stalking, conspiracy to commit child endangerment, and filing a false police report."
"Get your hands off me!" Linda shrieked, struggling against the officer as she was pulled toward the doorway. "Daniel! Tell her who I am! Daniel! Do something!"
Daniel turned his back on his mother, refusing to look at her as the officers escorted her screaming down the hallway.
The door clicked shut.
The room fell into a deep, profound silence, broken only by the soft, steady breathing of baby Leo in Claire's arms.
Daniel collapsed into the armchair beside the bed, burying his face in his trembling hands as quiet, heavy sobs wracked his body.
Claire set the baby gently into the bassinet beside her bed. She stood up, walked over to her husband, and wrapped her arms tightly around his trembling shoulders, pulling his head against her chest.

"I'm sorry, Claire," Daniel wept, clutching her waist. "I'm so sorry I didn't believe you... I'm so sorry I let her hurt you..."
"Shh," Claire whispered, kissing the top of his head as tears fell from her own eyes. "We know the truth now, Daniel. We know the truth."
