Chapter 6 - The Light We ChooseOne year later.

Summer in Illinois had brought a warm, golden sunshine that filled the backyard of the Miller home with the sweet scent of blooming jasmine, fresh-cut grass, and charcoal from the grill.
A large wooden deck overlooked a manicured lawn where a brand-new wooden swing set stood beneath the tall maple trees.
Eight-year-old Sophie was pushing one-year-old Leo on the bucket swing. The little boy had bright hazel eyes, a mop of dark curls, and was laughing hysterically as his sister pushed him back and forth.
"Faster, Sophie! Faster!" Leo babble-shrieked, waving his tiny hands in the air.
"Not too fast, little buddy!" Sophie giggled, gently catching the swing and pushing it back up into the warm air. "I gotta keep you safe!"
Sitting on the cushioned patio sofa, watching them with a warm cup of iced tea in her hand, was Claire.
She looked breathtaking—her skin glowing in the summer light, her eyes full of deep, unshakable peace.
Ethan walked out from the back glass doors carrying a tray of fresh lemonade and sliced watermelons. He wore shorts and a t-shirt, his hair slightly messy, a happy, contented smile on his face.
He set the tray on the patio table, walked over to Claire, and sat down beside her, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close against his side.
"What are you thinking about, beautiful?" Daniel asked softly, kissing her temple.
"I was thinking about two years ago," Claire said, leaning her head against his shoulder as they watched the children play. "I was thinking about how terrified I was in that hospital room."
Daniel’s grip around her waist tightened slightly, his posture filled with deep, quiet devotion. "And now?"
Claire looked across the yard at Sophie, who had stopped the swing to gently wipe a smudge of dirt off Leo's cheek before giving him a huge hug.
"And now," Claire smiled, tears of pure joy glistening in her eyes, "I realize that the worst storm of our lives was the thing that finally made us a real family."
Daniel looked at her, his heart overflowing with love. "We built this together, Claire. Nobody can ever break it again."
"Hey, Mom! Dad! Look!" Sophie called out from the grass, holding Leo's hand as the little boy took three wobbly, proud steps across the lawn toward the deck. "Leo’s walking to you!"
Claire and Daniel stood up together, holding hands as they walked down the deck steps onto the soft green grass.
Leo took two more wobbly steps, let out a triumphant squeal, and tumbled safely into Claire's waiting arms, while Sophie wrapped her arms around Daniel's leg.
Daniel dropped to his knees, pulling all three of them into a tight, warm, unbreakable embrace under the bright summer sun.
