Chapter 2 - The Billionaire’s Awakening

The ride back to the estate in Richard’s bulletproof SUV was suffocating. The boys were asleep, exhausted by the sheer adrenaline of their escape, their tiny hands clutching Emily’s blazer as if letting go would mean death. Richard sat in the passenger seat, his phone pressed to his ear, his voice a low, terrifying growl.

"Fire them all," he commanded the head of his private security detail. "I don't care if they’ve been with me for ten years. If they allowed Victoria to touch my children, they are complicit. Get the police to the perimeter. And if Victoria Lane is still on the property, have the security team physically restrain her. If she leaves before I get there, I will burn her entire social world to the ground."

He hung up and turned to look at Emily in the backseat. The moonlight highlighted the deep lines of stress etched into his face.

"I didn't believe her," Richard said, his voice barely a whisper. "I mean, I thought she was petty, I thought she was demanding, but I thought she wanted to be a mother to them. I thought..."

"You thought what was convenient, Richard," Emily said, her gaze fixed on the road. "You’ve spent three years paying nannies and housekeepers to provide the love you were too busy to give. Victoria just offered you the one thing you were missing: a polished, perfect partner who wouldn't demand anything from you. You didn't care who she was, as long as she stayed in the background."

"I see that now," he said, his voice choking.

When they arrived at the estate, the gates were wide open, and the house was a chaos of flashing lights. Police cruisers were parked on the lawn, and two security guards were pinning a screaming, hysterical Victoria Lane against the hood of her white sports car. She was clawing at the air, her designer dress torn, her hair a wild, unkempt mess.

"Richard! Tell them to let me go!" she shrieked the moment she saw him. "They’re insane! These people—these guards—they dragged me out of the master suite! This is a kidnapping!"

Richard didn't say a word. He exited the SUV, his movements slow, deliberate, and terrifying. He walked toward Victoria, who froze when she saw the look in his eyes—a look not of love, but of cold, systematic annihilation.

"You touched them," Richard said, his voice vibrating with suppressed violence.

"They were acting out!" Victoria stammered, her arrogance beginning to crumble into frantic self-preservation. "They were spoiled, Richard! I was just... I was trying to discipline them so they wouldn't embarrass us at the charity gala! You told me to handle it!"

Richard reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, digital recorder—the one Emily had kept in her apron for emergency medical logs. He pressed play. Victoria’s voice, cold and cruel, filled the driveway: "If those brats don't learn to sit still, I’ll send them to the wilderness camps in Montana. They won't see you for a year, and I’ll be the one controlling the trust funds."

Victoria’s face drained of all color. The police officers behind her moved in, their expressions hardening.

"You didn't just steal my watch, Victoria," Richard said, his voice devoid of emotion. "You tried to steal my future."
