CHAPTER 1 — The One Word

The lobby remained silent.

Dozens of executives watched.

Doctors waited.

Vivian knelt frozen beside her son.

And Dale sat quietly on the marble floor.

For nearly thirty seconds, he said nothing.

Then he spoke one word.

“Danny.”

The name seemed meaningless to everyone else.

But not to Dale.

Because Danny was his son.

And because every lesson Danny had taught him was sitting in front of him now.

Eli's screaming didn't stop.

But it changed.

Just slightly.

A pause.

A breath.

Dale continued speaking softly.

“My son used to hate bright lights too.”

No one interrupted.

“He hated loud rooms. Too many voices. Too many people trying to help.”

Eli's hands remained over his ears.

But his body was no longer shaking as violently.

Dale slowly removed a small keychain from his pocket.

An old metal gear.

He rolled it gently across the floor.

Not toward Eli.

Just beside himself.

Something predictable.

Something repetitive.

Something safe.

For the first time in nearly an hour, Eli's eyes shifted.

Only briefly.

But they shifted.

Vivian covered her mouth.

The specialists exchanged stunned glances.

Dale didn't celebrate.

He simply waited.

May you like

Because trust could not be rushed.

And neither could a frightened child.
