Chapter 2 - The Ovation and the Undercurrent

The ballroom on the ground floor of Carter Tower was a dazzling sea of crystal chandeliers, sparkling champagne flutes, and expensive silk gowns. Three hundred of New York’s elite sat at round tables draped in white linen, applauding wildly as the introductory video for the Children's Heart Hospital played on giant LED screens above the stage.

I stood in the wings just behind the heavy velvet curtain, my left arm pressed tightly against my side to hide the throbbing ache beneath my sleeve.

Beside me stood Dr. Andrew Vaughn. He looked immaculate in his custom-tailored black tuxedo, his sandy-blonde hair neatly styled, his smile radiant and disarming as he accepted whispered congratulations from a passing hospital board member. He slipped his arm around my waist, his fingers pressing just a fraction too hard into my ribs—a silent, physical warning that I had better look like the devoted, adoring fiancée I was expected to be.

“Smile, sweetheart,” Andrew murmured near my ear, his breath smelling faintly of scotch and mint. “The cameras are panning this way. Don't look like you’re attending a funeral. Tonight is about us.”

“I’m smiling, Andrew,” I whispered back, my lips stretching into a tight, mechanical curve.

Across the stage, standing near the VIP podium, was Ethan Carter.

He hadn’t looked at me once since we left the dressing suite, but I could feel the gravity of his presence pulling across the room. His posture was rigid, his gaze fixed straight ahead, but every few seconds, his eyes flicked toward the spot where Andrew’s hand rested on my waist.

“And now, ladies and gentlemen,” the master of ceremonies announced into the microphone, his voice echoing through the soaring hall, “to present this year’s Carter Foundation Humanitarian Award for medical excellence, please welcome our founder and CEO, Mr. Ethan Carter!”

Deafening applause erupted across the ballroom. Ethan stepped up to the mahogany podium, his expression an impenetrable mask of cool composure. He adjusted the microphone, looking out over the sea of wealthy donors and influential figures.

“Thank you,” Ethan began, his deep, resonant voice filling the room without a hint of strain. “Every year, this foundation supports miracles. We fund research, we build wings for children who need healing, and we honor the individuals who dedicate their lives to saving others.”

Andrew squeezed my waist a little tighter, beaming with pride. “That’s my cue, darling. Watch how they talk about me.”

Ethan paused, his eyes scanning the crowd before locking dead onto the VIP table at the front—and directly onto Andrew and me standing in the wings.

“Tonight, we honor a man whose hands have mended broken hearts,” Ethan continued, his voice carrying a strange, heavy cadence that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. “A man who projects an image of profound compassion and unwavering dedication to the vulnerable.”

The crowd murmured in agreement. Andrew puffed out his chest, stepping half a step forward toward the stage steps.

“However,” Ethan said, the single word cutting through the celebratory atmosphere like a razor-sharp blade.

The applause in the room instantly died down. The lighting technicians overhead seemed to hold their breath.

“True character is not measured by the applause you receive in a ballroom,” Ethan’s voice rang out, cold, steady, and utterly unforgiving as his eyes remained locked on Andrew. “True character is revealed behind closed doors, away from the cameras, where a man thinks no one is watching. And before we present this award tonight... there are a few uncomfortable truths that this city needs to hear.”

Andrew’s smile instantly vanished. His hand dropped from my waist.

“What is he talking about?” Andrew hissed under his breath, taking a half-step back, his face draining of color. “Is he having a mental breakdown? What the hell is going on?”

My heart hammered against my ribs so violently I thought it would break through the bruised bone. I looked up at Ethan on the stage, watching the cold, unyielding fury burning in his eyes, and realized with terrifying clarity:

Ethan wasn't just going to ruin Andrew's night.

He was going to destroy him completely.
