Chapter 6 - A New Dawn and True Freedom

Six months after that rainy afternoon outside the courthouse, the world looked entirely different.

The scars on my arm had faded into soft, silvery lines—gentle reminders of a past I survived, rather than chains that held me back. I was no longer hiding in the shadows of someone else's ego or working sixteen-hour days just to keep a toxic world from collapsing around me.

Instead, I sat on the private balcony of Ethan’s penthouse apartment overlooking Central Park as the autumn leaves turned brilliant shades of amber and gold.

A gentle evening breeze drifted across the terrace. I wore a simple, elegant emerald-green silk dress, my hair falling softly around my shoulders. On my left ring finger rested a stunning, delicate diamond ring—not heavy, not suffocating, but sparkling brilliantly under the fading sunset.

Footsteps echoed softly from the living room, followed by the clinking of two crystal champagne flutes.

Ethan stepped out onto the balcony, wearing an open-collared white shirt and dark trousers, looking relaxed and completely at peace. He handed me one of the flutes before wrapping his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder.

“Penny for your thoughts, future Mrs. Carter?” Ethan murmured, his voice warm and teasing.

I leaned back against his chest, smiling as I sipped the crisp champagne. “I was just thinking about how strange life is. Exactly six months ago, I was standing in a dressing room terrified of my own reflection, wondering if I’d ever escape.”

Ethan’s arms tightened around me, his embrace grounding and secure. “You didn't escape because of luck, Ava. You escaped because even when you were bruised and battered, you never lost your strength. You just needed someone to open the right door so you could finally let the truth out.”

I turned around in his arms, wrapping my arms around his neck and looking up into the eyes of the man who had changed my entire world.

“You opened the door, Ethan,” I whispered.

“And I’m never closing it,” he replied softly.

He leaned down, pressing his lips to mine in a tender, passionate kiss that washed away every remaining shadow of the past. Down below us, the lights of New York City began to twinkle like a million stars, illuminating a skyline that no longer felt terrifying or cold, but warm, welcoming, and entirely ours.

We had both found what we were looking for—not just in the grand halls of Carter Tower, but right here in each other's arms, where every tomorrow was safe, bright, and fiercely protected.
