Chapter 4 - The Closing Net

The morning after the gala, the front pages of every major New York newspaper didn't feature photos of the celebrities in their glittering gowns or the heartwarming donations made to the Children’s Heart Hospital.
Instead, giant bold headlines blazed across the newsstands: CELEBRATED SURGEON ARRESTED IN EMBEZZLEMENT AND DOMESTIC ABUSE SCANDAL. CARTER FOUNDATION UNCOVERS DARK SECRETS AT THE HEART HOSPITAL.
Inside the top-floor executive suite of Carter Tower, the morning light streamed softly through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the sprawling Manhattan skyline.
I sat at my executive desk—my real desk, not hiding in a corner or covering my arms with long sleeves, but wearing a comfortable cream-colored blouse that left my wrists free. On my desk sat a steaming cup of Earl Grey tea, perfectly brewed just the way I liked it.
The door to Ethan’s private office opened, and he walked out, holding a stack of cleared legal briefs. He stopped near my desk, looking down at me with a warm, gentle expression that the public never got to see.
“How is the arm holding up?” Ethan asked softly.
“Sore,” I admitted honestly, resting my hand near my elbow. “The doctor at the clinic said the bruising will take a few more weeks to completely fade. But the pain is... different now. It doesn't feel heavy anymore.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened slightly at the mention of the physical toll Andrew had taken on me, but he quickly masked it with a reassuring smile. “Good. Victoria called from the district attorney’s office an hour ago. With the financial fraud charges and the unsealed NDA affidavits from his past victims, Andrew’s bail was denied. He’s being held at Rikers pending trial, and his medical license has been indefinitely suspended by the state board.”
A profound wave of relief washed over me. It was over. The nightmare that had consumed my life, eroded my confidence, and kept me trapped in fear was finally dismantled.
“Thank you, Ethan,” I said, using his first name for the first time outside of a private moment. “You didn't have to risk your entire foundation’s reputation for me.”
Ethan stepped closer, resting his hands flat against my desk, leaning down slightly so his eyes met mine.
“Ava, from the moment you started working for me, you kept my entire life running smoothly,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into that deep, intimate register that made my heart skip a beat. “You remembered every meeting, you solved every crisis, and you stayed late when everyone else went home. But you were carrying a world of pain that you thought you had to bear alone.”
“I didn't think anyone would believe me,” I confessed, looking down at my hands. “He was so good at hiding it.”
“I would have believed you if you told me on day one,” Ethan said firmly, reaching out to gently touch my fingers. His touch was warm, steady, and entirely safe. “And I would have torn him apart a lot sooner.”
I looked up, our eyes locking in the quiet morning light. The unspoken tension that had lingered between us for months—the stolen glances, the folded scarf, the quiet longing—finally broke free from the shadows.

“Does this mean,” I whispered with a small, playful smile, “that I’m still your executive assistant, or something else?”
Ethan’s lips curved into a slow, breathtaking smile. “I think,” he murmured, gently lacing his fingers through mine, “it’s time for a promotion.”
