Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Master ControlThe lower sub-basement of Viscari Tower was a subterranean labyrinth of reinforced concrete, massive industrial chillers, and the primary data racks that powered fifty-two floors of luxury apartments, corporate suites, and private penthouses. The hum of cooling fans vibrated through the floorboards like the purr of a caged beast.

Lena walked beside Matteo down the narrow corridor, her boots clicking sharply against the polished concrete. Owen Rusk followed a few paces behind, his hand resting nervously near his holster.

“If the cameras were looped from an internal terminal, it means whoever did this has root access to the building’s building management system (BMS),” Lena explained, keeping her voice low as they approached the heavy steel door of the master control room. “That rules out a random street criminal or an outside contractor. This required insider credentials and a deep understanding of Otis high-speed hydraulic controllers.”

Matteo stopped before the heavy door, holding his hand against the biometric scanner. The green light flashed, and the pneumatic locks hissed open.

“Who has root access besides Owen?” Matteo asked, stepping into the cool, glowing expanse of the server room.

“Only the head of systems architecture, Julian Vance,” Owen replied, rushing to catch up and tapping at a diagnostic terminal. “Julian’s been with the company for eight years. He handles all the smart-building integrations for the high-rises. He has an apartment on the thirty-eighth floor.”

“Bring him down,” Matteo ordered.

Owen picked up his radio, barking orders into the comm-link. “Extraction team to 38-B. Secure Julian Vance and bring him to Sub-Basement Control immediately.”

Minutes ticked by in agonizing silence. The hum of the server racks seemed to amplify every breath. Lena leaned over one of the diagnostic monitors, her eyes scanning the raw command-line interface logs that Owen had pulled up on the primary screen. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, her mind racing through the complex hexadecimal sequences of the elevator’s firmware.

“Look at this timestamp,” Lena murmured, pointing to a string of code buried deep within the kernel logs.

Matteo stepped behind her, leaning close enough that she could catch the subtle, clean scent of sandalwood and expensive tailoring. “What am I looking at?”

“A manual override injected via an external SSH tunnel,” Lena explained, tracing the line of text. “Someone didn't just pick the mechanical lock upstairs. They accessed the controller motherboard through an active network port hidden inside the shaft itself, then spoofed the floor sensor array to trick the hall doors into believing Private Car One was locked at the lobby landing while the car was actually parked twelve floors down.”

“A double trap,” Matteo said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. “Mechanical execution combined with digital manipulation. If I hadn't stepped toward that door, or if I hadn't looked down—”

“You would have plunged fifty-two stories down a sealed concrete shaft,” Lena finished grimly.

Before Matteo could reply, the heavy iron door of the control room crashed open. Two security guards stumbled backward into the room, gasping for air, dragging a limp figure between them and dumping him heavily onto the concrete floor.

It was Julian Vance.

Or what was left of him.

His throat had been neatly, cleanly slashed from ear to ear. A pool of dark, viscous blood was already spreading across the pristine floor tiles, soaking into the cuffs of his expensive dress shirt.

Owen Rusk swore loudly, drawing his weapon and spinning toward the empty corridor outside. “Clear! Perimeter is breached!”

Matteo knelt beside the body, his expression turning into a mask of pure, glacial fury. He reached out, sliding two fingers against Julian’s cold neck, then checked the dead man’s stiffening hand. Clipped tightly between Julian’s bloodless fingers was a small, scorched flash drive.

Matteo pried it loose and stood up, holding the device up to the fluorescent light. Etched onto the matte-black casing was a familiar, venomous symbol: a silver serpent coiled around a dagger.
