Chapter 5 - The Grand Continental SiegeThe rain fell in sheets against the reinforced glass of the Grand Continental Hotel’s private penthouse elevator as Matteo’s private car bypassed the main lobby entirely, lifting them silently toward the top floor.

This time, the elevator car hummed with smooth, perfect mechanical precision.
Lena stood in the center of the car, flanked by Matteo and four heavily armed security operatives in tactical black gear. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her hands were steady. She gripped a ruggedized tablet connected directly to Viscari Tower’s sub-basement mainframe, ready to sever the syndicate’s local access codes the moment they breached Kolov’s suite.
“When the doors open, stay behind me,” Matteo instructed, checking the magazine of his suppressed Sig Sauer pistol with a crisp, mechanical click.
“I can handle myself, Mr. Viscari,” Lena replied, her chin lifting with quiet defiance.
Matteo gave a dry, humorless smirk. “I have no doubt, Miss Ortiz. But in my world, people who save my life tend to become irreplaceable.”
Ding.
The elevator chime rang out with crisp clarity. The heavy brass doors slid open smoothly.
Chaos erupted instantly.
Two armed guards standing watch in the private foyer raised their submachine guns, but Owen Rusk and his team were faster. Two muffled pops echoed through the hallway, and the guards dropped cleanly before they could squeeze a trigger.
“Clear!” Owen shouted, moving forward and kicking open the massive mahogany double doors leading into Viktor Kolov’s executive suite.
Matteo strode into the penthouse with the cold, lethal grace of an apex predator, his weapon raised. Lena followed closely behind, her tablet glowing in her hands as she scanned the room for local network routers.
The penthouse was a sprawling, opulent monument to stolen wealth—crystal chandeliers, white leather furniture, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing skyline of Chicago. Standing by the far window, holding a glass of scotch and looking entirely unperturbed by the sudden intrusion, was Viktor Kolov—a heavily built man in his late fifties with silver-streaked hair, a sharp tailored suit, and a brutal scar running down his left cheek.
“Matteo,” Kolov greeted smoothly, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. “I must admit, I expected you to take a much longer trip down through your own lobby tonight. Julian assured me the mechanical lock modification was foolproof.”
Matteo lowered his weapon just enough to let the barrel point directly at Kolov’s chest. “Julian is currently bleeding out on the floor of my sub-basement, Viktor. Your digital trap failed.”
Kolov’s smile faded, replaced by a cold, hardened glare. “You think killing a tech rat and storming my hotel changes anything, Viscari? The city belongs to whoever controls the foundations. Your towers, your hotels, your rail lines—they all sit on concrete I poured. One keystroke, and your entire empire comes crashing down around your ears.”
“Not today,” Lena spoke up, stepping forward into the center of the room.
Kolov’s eyes flicked toward her, a look of profound condescension crossing his face. “And who is this? Your new mistress in a janitor’s uniform?”
Lena didn't flinch. She raised her ruggedized tablet and tapped a single red icon on the screen.
“I’m the person who just locked you out of every server node between here and Lake Michigan,” Lena said coolly.
On the far wall of the penthouse, three massive digital display monitors abruptly flashed red, displaying a sweeping cascade of data wiping scripts before going completely dark.
Kolov’s face drained of color. He dropped his scotch glass, the crystal shattering against the hardwood floor as he lunged toward his main control console. The screens remained stubbornly black.
“You... what did you do?” Kolov snarled, turning on her with naked rage.
“I rewrote your logic,” Lena said, her voice echoing with the quiet strength of twenty-five years of listening to her father explain how machines obey truth over lies. “Your backdoors are burned. Your proxy nodes are traced. And federal marshals are currently seizing your entire financial ledger downstairs.”

Before Kolov could lunge further, Matteo stepped between them, bringing the butt of his pistol down hard across Kolov’s jaw with a sickening crunch. The syndicate boss crumpled instantly to the carpet, unconscious.
Matteo lowered his weapon, breathing heavily, and turned to look at Lena. The tension in his shoulders finally eased, replaced by a look of profound, unshakeable respect.
