Chapter 3 - The Pressure CookerBy midnight, the Moretti estate had transformed from a quiet luxury mansion into an impenetrable fortress.

Heavy steel shutters descended over the lower windows. Tactical guards in plain black uniforms patrolled the perimeter with Belgian Malinois attack dogs. The rain continued to fall outside, washing over the stone walls, but inside the master wing on the third floor, the atmosphere was surreal.

Emma sat on the edge of a massive king-sized bed covered in Egyptian cotton sheets. The room was larger than her entire apartment in the city, smelling of sandalwood, leather, and rain. In the adjoining dressing room, four-year-old Lily was fast asleep on a velvet sofa, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, holding a brand-new, un-bugged stuffed bear that Marco had retrieved from the estate's emergency supplies.

A soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door.

Emma jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. "Come in?"

The door swung open, and Alessandro walked inside. He had removed his tie, and his black shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the faint edge of a silver crucifix chain around his neck. He carried a silver tray with a cup of hot chamomile tea and a plate of warm pastries.

"She is sleeping?" Alessandro asked quietly, gesturing toward the dressing room.

"Yes, sir," Emma whispered, standing up quickly. "Mr. Moretti... you don't have to serve me. I'm your maid. I should be—"

"Sit down, Emma," Alessandro said, placing the tray on the nightstand beside her. "Tonight, you are not my maid. You are a guest under my protection."

Emma looked at the tea, then up at the formidable man who ruled the city’s underworld. Up close, she could see the fine lines of grief around his dark eyes—lines that had been carved seven years ago when he lost his wife and unborn daughter to a car bomb planted by his enemies.

"Why are you doing this for us?" Emma asked softly, her voice barely audible above the hum of the rain against the glass. "You could have thrown us out. Most men in your position would have eliminated anyone remotely connected to the threat."

Alessandro walked over to the window, looking out at the dark gardens below.

"Seven years ago," Alessandro began, his voice low and heavy with old pain, "this floor was prepared for a family. I spent three months choosing the wood for the nursery crib. I bought toys from Europe. I imagined what it would feel like to hear a child's footsteps running down these hallways."

He turned to look at her.

"My wife died eight days before her due date," he continued softly. "For seven years, this house was not a home. It was a mausoleum. A place where I waited for my enemies to try their luck."

Emma felt a lump form in her throat. She had heard rumors among the staff about the Don’s lost family, but hearing it from his own lips broke her heart.

"Then eleven months ago," Alessandro said, taking a step toward her, "you arrived. You worked quietly. You never complained. And one morning, I heard your daughter laughing in that forgotten room."

He paused, staring into Emma's warm brown eyes.

"That laugh saved my life, Emma. It reminded me that there was still light in the world, even in a house built on blood and iron."

Emma’s breath hitched. She looked at this terrifying, powerful man, and for the first time, she didn't see a mob boss. She saw a lonely, grieving father who had built a fortress to keep the world from breaking his heart again.

"Lily loves it here," Emma whispered, tears shimmering in her eyes. "She told me last week that she thinks you're a knight who lives in a castle."

A rare, genuine smile touched Alessandro's lips. "A knight? I fear your daughter’s judgment of character needs work."

"No," Emma said softly, standing up to face him. "She sees people for who they really are. Just like she saw that doll."

Before Alessandro could reply, the radio on his belt crackled to life.

"Don Alessandro," Marco's voice came through the speaker, tight and urgent. "We have a situation downstairs. Dominic Valenti’s men just intercepted the false broadcast we transmitted through the doll's frequency. They think you are leaving the estate at 2:00 AM for an emergency shipment at Dock 14."

Alessandro's smile vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, ruthless demeanor of the Don.

"And how did they react?" Alessandro asked into the radio.

"Valenti just mobilized his entire heavy strike team," Marco reported. "Fifty men, armed with automatic weapons. They aren't going to Dock 14, boss. They realized Victoria was compromised when she stopped answering her private phone. They are coming straight here to breach the estate and kill everyone inside."
