Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Machine

Within hours, the Bennett estate was transformed into a high-security medical compound. Jonathan bypassed the public hospitals, flying in a trusted team of elite, non-disclosure-bound scientists to analyze both Lucas and the bizarre object Lily had extracted.
Lucas sat in a darkened room, wearing protective amber glasses to shield his hypersensitive, recovering eyes. For the first time in over a decade, he looked at his own hands, marveling at the texture of his skin. He looked at his father, seeing the heavy lines of grief and stress finally melting away from Jonathan’s face.
"The optical tests are miraculous, Mr. Bennett," Dr. Aris, the family’s chief medical officer, reported in a hushed, trembling voice. "His eyes were never damaged. His optic nerve wasn't dead. It was being actively suppressed. This... object was the culprit."
Dr. Aris projected a microscopic scan of the glass-like needle onto a monitor. What they saw sent a chill through the room. It wasn't organic. Inside the translucent shell lay a highly advanced, microscopic array of circuitry—nanotechnology so sophisticated it defied current public medical science.
"It was a neural dampener," Dr. Aris explained, his face pale. "Planted directly onto the optic chiasm. It was feeding a continuous, low-frequency electrical pulse to block all visual data from reaching his brain. Someone didn't just let Lucas go blind, Jonathan. Someone made him blind when he was a toddler."
Jonathan’s blood ran cold. The implications were monstrous. This wasn't a medical tragedy; it was a targeted, long-term act of corporate warfare or personal vengeance.

"Find that girl," Jonathan commanded his head of security, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "Lily. She knew exactly what it was. She is the only key to finding out who did this to my son."
Meanwhile, Lucas tuned out the adults, his hyper-acute hearing picking up a strange, rhythmic tapping outside. He looked toward the window. Sitting on the perimeter wall, watching the mansion with an unreadable expression, was Lily.
