Chapter 3 - Shadows of Corporate Warfare

The search for Lily ended before it truly began, as she willingly let security bring her inside the following morning. She sat in the opulent library, refusing food or juice, her eyes fixed on Lucas, who was softly playing a melancholic melody on the grand piano. Now that he could see the keys, his music possessed a breathtaking, cinematic depth.

Jonathan entered the room, flanked by his most trusted childhood friend and corporate CFO, Marcus Vance.

"Lily," Jonathan said gently, kneeling before her. "You saved my son. But I need to know how you knew that thing was inside his eye. Who gave it to you? Who told you to find him?"

Lily reached into her oversized, tattered coat pocket and pulled out a worn, leather-bound journal. She handed it to Jonathan. "My mommy wrote this. She said if anything happened to her, I had to find the boy at the piano. She said it was our family's debt to pay."

Jonathan opened the journal. As he flipped through the pages filled with complex chemical equations and schematic designs of the neural dampener, his breath hitched. The handwriting belonged to Dr. Elena Vance—Marcus’s sister and a brilliant cybernetics researcher who had allegedly died in a lab fire ten years ago.

Jonathan looked up at Marcus, expecting shock. Instead, he saw a cold, calculating emptiness in his best friend’s eyes.

Before Jonathan could speak, the library doors burst open. A tactical squad of armed mercenaries, wearing unmarked black gear, flooded the room, aiming their weapons at Jonathan, Lucas, and Lily.

Marcus calmly stepped away from Jonathan, straightening his tailored suit jacket. "I really wished you hadn't found her, Jonathan," Marcus said, his voice completely devoid of the warmth he had feigned for decades. "Elena was supposed to destroy all her prototypes before she... passed away."
