Chapter 3 - The Alliance of Unlikely AlliesThe Daybreak Diner was a quiet, vinyl-boothed restaurant smelling of roasted coffee and fresh toast. Claire sat in a corner booth, dressed in a sharp grey blazer, her long brown hair tied in a professional twist.

When Daniel sat down across from her, he looked at his daughter with a sudden, overwhelming sense of pride. She possessed her mother’s fierce eyes and his own stubborn determination, but she had directed those gifts toward helping others.

“Tell me everything,” Daniel said, placing his hands flat on the laminate table.

Claire opened a thick legal manila folder. “Victor Sterling runs an illegal high-stakes laundering operation out of the VIP suites above the main casino floor. The night Leo was framed, a second security camera—a hidden backup system installed by the building’s original fire safety contractors—recorded the whole thing. It shows Sterling’s lieutenant, a man named Brody, placing the forged documents into Leo’s locker.”

“Where is that footage now?” Daniel asked.

“It’s stored on an air-gapped hard drive inside Sterling’s private vault behind the cashier's cage on the main floor,” Claire explained frustrately. “I’ve filed three subpoenas requesting access to those backup drives, but Sterling’s corporate lawyers keep blocking them with endless judicial stays. In two weeks, Leo’s trial begins. If we don’t get that drive before then, the judge will admit the altered prosecution evidence, and Leo will go to prison for twenty years.”

Daniel stared at the folder, his mind racing through financial networks, corporate structures, and political connections.

“Subpoenas take months,” Daniel said, a slow, cold smile spreading across his face—the look that had made him one of the most feared negotiators in the corporate world. “We don’t have months. But Sterling has a weakness.”

“What weakness?” Claire asked.

“Greed,” Daniel replied. “Sterling has been trying to buy my commercial real estate portfolio in Atlantic City for five years. He wants legitimacy. If I offer to sell him those properties at a twenty percent discount—and insist on finalizing the deal in person at the casino—he’ll jump at the chance.”

“How does that help us get the hard drive?”

“Because,” Daniel leaned in, whispering, “a transaction of that magnitude requires an on-site audit of the casino’s physical security and financial vault. I will bring my own forensic IT team into the vault under the guise of due diligence. While I keep Sterling occupied at Table 12, Maya and your technical specialist can extract the hidden drive.”

Claire looked at her father, seeing for the first time in years not just a cold tycoon, but a man willing to use his power as a shield to protect the innocent.

“It’s dangerous, Dad,” Claire said softly. “If Sterling catches you interfering with his operation, he won’t just sue you. He’s dangerous.”

Daniel reached across the table and gently took his daughter’s hand. “For seventeen years, I built an empire that kept us apart. Let me use it tonight to bring a mother her son back.”
