Chapter 4 - The Heist for the TruthAt 2:00 A.M. on Tuesday night, the Mercer Crown Casino was bathed in gold light and ambient jazz.

Victor Sterling—a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored velvet tuxedo—sat across from Daniel at Table 12. Sitting between them was a thick stack of real estate transfer contracts worth over eighty million dollars.
“I must admit, Daniel,” Sterling said, swirling a glass of scotch, “I was surprised when your representatives called. I thought you preferred gambling on cards, not partnering with me on Atlantic City prime turf.”
“Cards are a pastime, Victor,” Daniel said smoothly, tossing a high-value chip into the center pot. “Business is business. My auditors are currently reviewing the vault logs downstairs to ensure your casino’s physical security protocols meet my insurance standards.”
“Of course,” Sterling smirked. “My facility is impenetrable. Nothing enters or leaves my vault without my direct authorization.”
Deep beneath the casino floor, inside the secure server alcove adjacent to the main vault, Maya Reed stood in her cleaning uniform, holding a high-speed data extraction device provided by Claire’s forensic expert.
Beside her, Claire monitored the internal camera feeds on a encrypted tablet.
“You have three minutes before the automated security sweep loops back, Maya,” Claire whispered into her earbud. “The backup hard drive is mounted inside the gray junction box behind the secondary breaker.”
Maya’s fingers were steady. The fear that had paralyzed her for months was gone, replaced by a mother’s iron resolve. She unlocked the breaker panel using a keycard cloned during Daniel’s arrival, inserted the drive dock, and watched the digital progress bar climb: 20%... 50%... 80%...
Suddenly, a red light flashed on the corridor wall.
“Claire!” Maya gasped softly into the comms. “The guard is coming down the hallway early!”
On the main floor, Daniel saw a flash on his smartphone—a subtle vibration alert from Claire.
Without missing a beat, Daniel stood up abruptly from Table 12, knocking his crystal glass of scotch onto the green felt, splashing liquid onto Victor Sterling’s pristine tuxedo and the stack of unsigned contracts.
“What the hell, Mercer!” Sterling shouted, jumping back in anger.
“My apologies, Victor,” Daniel said loudly, drawing the attention of every pit boss and security guard in the room. “My hand slipped. Let me call over the floor manager to replace these documents immediately!”

The floor guards rushed toward Table 12 to assist their high-profile guest, leaving the basement security desk completely unmanned for sixty crucial seconds.
Below, Maya watched the progress bar hit 100% Complete. She snatched the drive, slipped it into her apron pocket, and stepped back into the shadows just as the guard walked past the door.
