Chapter 1: The Shattered Mirror and the Hidden Truth

Then, a sharp, blood-curdling scream pierced the heavy silence. It definitely was not Vanessa, his high-profile fiancée.
Driven by instinct, Daniel threw off his covers, rose hastily from his bed, shrugged into a silk robe, and pulled his bedroom door open. At the far end of the east corridor, illuminated by the flickering, amber glow of a massive crystal chandelier, he spotted the catastrophic wreckage: millions of tiny, glittering shards of his grandmother's priceless antique mirror spread haphazardly across the dark hardwood floor.
Resting directly among the jagged shards of glass was an unmoving woman.
It was Maria Collins, the estate's dedicated housekeeper. She was dressed in her standard blue service uniform, which was now heavily soaked in dark, spreading blood. A deep, ugly gash cut across her pale forehead, and both of her forearms were littered with raw, bleeding cuts from the broken glass beneath her.
Standing over her, looking entirely out of place in the gorgeous black designer gown she had worn to a high-profile charity gala earlier that evening, was Vanessa Hart. Vanessa had a firm, merciless grip on Maria’s wrists, aggressively hauling her limp body backward across the abrasive glass.
“What on earth are you doing?” Daniel demanded, his voice echoing sharply down the corridor.
Vanessa froze and glanced up. For a fleeting, terrifying second, her eyes contained a chilling, predatory coldness that Daniel had never witnessed in the two years they had been together. Then, as if flipping an internal switch, the radiant, charming smile that had originally caused him to fall deeply in love with her reappeared flawlessly on her face.
“Don't worry, sweetheart,” Vanessa cooed smoothly. “I've already handled everything.”
“Handled what exactly?”
“Maria was heavily intoxicated,” Vanessa lied without missing a beat, her voice dripping with artificial concern [cite: "“Maria was heavily intoxicated. She tried to att:ack me, lost her footing, and crashed right into the mirror. I was moving her to a spare room so we could prevent a media scandal.”].”
Daniel stared at her, his mind struggling to reconcile her words with reality. He honestly didn't know much about Maria’s personal life, despite the fact she had worked at the property loyally for nearly three years. But he knew one concrete, undeniable detail: Maria absolutely never drank alcohol. At staff holiday parties and family gatherings, she always politely turned down even a single sip of wine or champagne.
Furthermore, no rational person drags an unconscious, bleeding woman across a bed of razor-sharp broken glass to safety.
Ignoring Vanessa, Daniel rushed forward and crouched down next to the housekeeper. Maria was struggling raggedly to breathe, her chest rising and falling in shallow, desperate gasps. When Daniel gently placed a warm hand on her blood-smeared shoulder, her eyelids fluttered open, revealing eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated terror as she stared up at him.
“She knows about Noah,” Maria breathed out, her voice barely a rattle.
At the mention of that single name, Vanessa’s warm, loving smile completely vanished, replaced by a mask of frozen panic.
“She’s completely delirious,” Vanessa stated instantly, stepping closer and attempting to pull Daniel away. “Come away from her, Daniel. She’s out of her mind.”
Maria ignored Vanessa, her fingers twitching as she attempted to whisper something else vital, but the agony was too much, and she faded back into unconsciousness.
“Call an ambulance right now,” Daniel commanded, glaring up at his fiancée with a cold authority that brooked no argument.
“We can just call our private doctor,” Vanessa argued, her voice rising in pitch. “If an ambulance arrives here at this hour, the press might find out and turn this into a public circus.”

“Call one. Right now!”
For the very first time since he had crossed paths with her, Vanessa actually looked terrified. Without another word, Daniel pulled out his own cell phone, dialed emergency services himself, and directed them to the estate gates.
