Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the PacificThe hospital room seemed to instantly expand and then violently contract around Daniel. He felt as though the floor had completely dropped out from beneath his feet, leaving him suspended in a terrifying, freezing void.

Andrew.

His younger brother.

The name echoed in his ears like a ghost story from another lifetime. Andrew had vanished six years ago during a solo sailing trip along the rugged, unpredictable coastline of the Pacific Ocean. His sleek, state-of-the-art yacht had been discovered battered and completely wrecked off the coast of Santa Barbara, its sails shredded and its hull split open on the rocks. Despite an exhaustive, multi-million-dollar search and rescue operation funded entirely by Whitmore Holdings, Andrew’s body was never recovered.

That devastating, lingering tragedy had completely broken their mother. She had withered away inside the massive Beverly Hills mansion, sinking into a profound, inescapable depression before dying just two years later, carrying to her grave the absolute, unshakeable conviction that her youngest son had drowned in the dark ocean depths.

“Andrew is dead,” Daniel muttered quietly, his voice hollow, desperately clinging to the only reality he had known for half a decade.

“No,” Maria corrected him firmly, her eyes burning with absolute, terrifying certainty.”"].

Daniel stared at her, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. “Staged it? Why would Andrew stage his own death? He had everything!”

“He didn't have freedom,” Maria explained, wincing as a sharp wave of pain shot through her fractured fingers. “You don't know what it was like living under your mother's thumb, bound by the crushing corporate expectations of Whitmore Holdings. Andrew wanted out. He wanted a normal life. But the family would never have let him walk away cleanly. So, he planned his exit meticulously. He needed an inside accomplice—someone he trusted implicitly. That was me. I was working as a junior secretary at the corporate office back then before I transitioned to household staff to keep a low profile.”

“And you helped him disappear?” Daniel asked, a mixture of betrayal and shock washing over him.

“I loved him, Mr. Whitmore,” Maria confessed softly, tears spilling freely over her cheeks. “And he loved me. We kept our relationship a strict secret because of the class divide—your mother would have destroyed both of us. The night he sailed out of Santa Barbara, he swam ashore miles away while his empty boat was set adrift on autopilot to crash into the rocks. He went underground. We planned to reunite once things settled down. But then... things got complicated.”

Daniel gripped the edges of the plastic chair. “Noah.”

“Yes. I found out I was pregnant right after he vanished. I managed to keep it hidden, working quietly within the estate under your radar. But Andrew is still alive, Daniel. And recently... he tried to make contact with me. He sent word through a secure channel.”

“Why?” Daniel demanded. “If he’s alive, why hasn't he contacted me? Why stay hidden?”

“Because someone is hunting him,” Maria said, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. “And that someone is the exact woman you are planning to marry.”
