Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in Beverly HillsBy 6:00 a.m., the gray dawn of Saturday morning was breaking over the hills of Los Angeles. Daniel left Maria resting under heavy police guard at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, flanked by two of his most trusted private security operatives.

He drove his black Bentley back up the winding, tree-lined roads of Beverly Hills, pulling through the wrought-iron security gates of the Whitmore estate just as the automatic sprinklers clicked off. The mansion looked breathtakingly serene in the morning light, completely belying the violence and bloodshed that had stained its hardwood floors only hours earlier.

When Daniel walked through the grand double doors of the foyer, Vanessa was waiting for him.

She was dressed in an immaculate white silk lounge set, holding a cup of freshly brewed coffee. Her hair was styled perfectly, and her face bore an expression of serene, wounded innocence.

“Daniel, darling,” she said smoothly, stepping across the marble floor to meet him. “Thank goodness you’re back. I was worried sick all night. How is the maid? Is she going to be alright?”

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks. He didn't flinch away from her as she reached out to touch his lapel, but his eyes—cold, dead, and utterly devoid of warmth—caused her hand to pause mid-air.

“Cut the act, Vanessa,” Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

Her smile faltered for a fraction of a second, though she quickly recovered. “What on earth do you mean, sweetheart? You look exhausted. Let’s sit down and—”

“I said, cut the act,” Daniel repeated, his voice snapping like a whip through the silent foyer.

He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a manila folder containing copies of Maria’s medical reports, along with printed surveillance stills from the estate's east corridor security cameras that had captured every second of the attack despite the broken mirror, and tossed them carelessly onto the marble coffee table.

Vanessa looked down at the folder. The color drained from her face, leaving her skin stark white against her silk blouse. The mask of the loving fiancée shattered completely, revealing the calculating, ruthless operative beneath.

“You checked the security archives,” she whispered, her voice losing its sugary sweetness.

“I checked everything, Vanessa,” Daniel replied, stepping closer to her until tower over her height. “I know who you really are. I know about your background as an asset tracer. I know why you targeted me two years ago. And above all... I know about Andrew.”

Panic flared in Vanessa’s eyes, instantly replaced by a dangerous, cornered defiance. She didn't bother denying it anymore. A cold, bitter laugh escaped her lips.

“You always were smarter than your father gave you credit for, Daniel,” Vanessa hissed, stepping back and crossing her arms. “It’s a shame you had to ruin a perfectly good arrangement.”

“An arrangement?” Daniel snarled. “You tried to murder an innocent woman in my home! You hunted down my brother!”

“Your brother is sitting on a multi-billion-dollar stake in Whitmore Holdings that rightfully belongs to the corporate board—or to me, once we were married and an unexpected tragedy befell you both,” Vanessa spat back, venom dripping from every word. “Do you really think a high-flying corporate empire like yours is built on clean hands, Daniel? Andrew stole from his own family. He ran away like a coward. And I was simply going to finish what your mother started.”

Before Vanessa could finish her sentence, heavy footsteps echoed from the arched entryway behind her.

Marcus Vance stepped into the foyer, flanked by three armed security specialists. At the same time, two uniformed local police officers walked in through the front doors, holding an active felony arrest warrant signed by a county judge less than thirty minutes prior.

Vanessa spun around, her eyes widening as she realized the trap had fully closed around her.

“Vanessa Hart,” the lead police officer stated formally, stepping forward with handcuffs ready. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, assault resulting in bodily harm, and corporate espionage. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As the cold steel cuffs snapped tightly around her wrists, Vanessa didn't scream or beg. She simply turned her head, fixing Daniel with a dark, venomous glare that promised retribution. But Daniel didn't flinch. He watched her emotionlessly as she was escorted out of the Beverly Hills mansion and pushed into the back of a waiting patrol car.

The nightmare inside the house was finally over. But across the border in Mexico, a much larger journey was just beginning.
