PART 2: The Name in the Dark

The name Beatrice fell into the silence of the room like a drop of acid.
Grace felt a cold chill run down her spine. Beatrice had been Caleb’s first love—a quiet, artistic girl from Richmond whom he had dated during his early college years. Three years ago, Beatrice had tragically taken her own life after a severe bout of depression following a mysterious corporate scandal that ruined her family. Caleb had been shattered, shutting himself out from the world until Katherine entered his life a year later.
"Beatrice?" Grace whispered, her voice shaking. "Caleb, Beatrice died years ago. What does Katherine have to do with her?"
Caleb stood up slowly, wiping the sweat from his forehead. The gentle, hardworking boy Grace raised was completely gone, replaced by a stranger with hollow, vengeful eyes. He walked over to his dresser, unlocked a small wooden box, and pulled out a stack of old, faded printouts and a USB drive.
"Katherine isn't who she says she is, Mom," Caleb said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Her real name isn't Katherine Vance. It’s Katherine Dupont. Her father owned Dupont Logistics—the company that framed Beatrice’s father for embezzlement, driving their family into bankruptcy and forcing Beatrice into the despair that killed her."
Grace gasped, clutching her chest. "No... that can't be. Katherine is a sweet, simple girl. She works at a community library!"
"It was a lie, Mom! All of it!" Caleb suddenly snapped, slamming his fist against the dresser. "She changed her name, moved to Oakhaven Springs, and played the part of the humble, innocent girl to escape her family's dirty reputation. I found out three months ago. I found Beatrice’s old diary, and there were emails... emails from a 'Katherine' threatening to destroy Beatrice's life if she didn't leave the city."
"So you married her... just to torture her?" Robert, Caleb's father, stepped into the room, his face dark with disappointment.
"I wanted her to feel the terror Beatrice felt," Caleb whispered, his tears returning. "Tonight, on our wedding night, I showed her the files. I told her I knew exactly who she was. I told her that her life as a beloved wife was an illusion. I wanted her to break."

Grace looked at her son in absolute horror. "You trapped her, Caleb. You brought a woman into our home, made her vow her life to you, just to exact vengeance?"
Without another word, Grace turned on her heel and ran toward the guest room where Katherine was hiding.
