Chapter 3 - The Golden CageThe morning sun cast pale, slanting bars of gold across the polished oak floor of the east wing sitting room. Maya stood by the open French doors, breathing in the crisp morning air while adjusting the collar of her new attire—no longer the faded, oversized maid's uniform, but a practical, dark grey utility jumpsuit fitted for movement and durability.

In the center of the room, stretched out across a massive Turkish rug with his chin resting on his paws, was Duke.
The transformation in the massive Cane Corso over the past week had astonished the entire estate. The chronic stiffness in his left hind leg had begun to ease under Maya’s daily routine of gentle physical therapy, warm compresses, and specialized nutrient-rich diets prepared directly in the main kitchen under her strict supervision. No longer wary or aggressive, Duke followed her from room to room like a living shadow, his dark, opaque eyes tracking her every movement with absolute devotion.
Tap. Tap.
The double doors swung open without warning. Isabella Cross stepped into the room, impeccably dressed in a tailored cream wool coat and designer boots that clicked sharply against the wood. Her expression was a mask of tightly controlled disdain as she looked down at the massive dog blocking her path.
"Get that beast out of the way," Isabella demanded, waving a gloved hand dismissively.
Duke didn't move. He didn't growl, but his massive head lifted slightly, his ears pinning back in a quiet display of territorial warning.
Maya stepped out from the kitchenette area holding a clipboard. "Good morning, Ms. Cross. Duke is resting. If you need to speak with Mr. Castellano, his study is on the second floor."
Isabella turned her sharp gaze onto Maya, taking in the new utility jumpsuit and the authoritative stance. A bitter laugh escaped her lips. "Ah, yes. The great promotion. From scrubbing baseboards to walking the boss's pet. Tell me, Maya, how long do you think this little charade is going to last? Do you seriously believe that because you managed to wash a dirty dog, you actually belong in this house?"
Maya remained calm, keeping her voice level and professional. "Mr. Castellano made the assignment, Ms. Cross. If you have concerns about estate staffing, you should take them up with him."
"Don't quote Vincent to me," Isabella snapped, stepping closer, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss. "I have known Vincent Castellano since we were children in Palermo. I know the kind of women he keeps around, and I know how quickly he discards things when they become inconvenient. You are a temporary amusement—a stray he brought in off the street because he found your little farm-girl routine amusing. But once he realizes you are completely out of your depth, he will throw you out just like all the others."
Before Maya could respond, a deep, resonant voice echoed from the doorway behind Isabella.
"Isabella."
The silk-and-steel authority in Vincent’s voice made Isabella instantly freeze. She turned around to see him standing under the archway, his black overcoat unbuttoned, his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets. His expression was dangerously still.
"Vincent," Isabella recovered quickly, pasting a bright, charming smile onto her face as she glided toward him. "I was just telling our little rehabilitation coordinator how impressive it is that she has managed to keep your dog from tearing the estate apart. But we really need to discuss the guest list for the gubernatorial gala this weekend. The senator's wife called twice—"
"The guest list is finalized," Vincent interrupted, his voice devoid of warmth. He stepped past her, walking directly toward the center of the room where Maya and Duke stood. "And my staff arrangements are not open for debate, Isabella. Especially not within earshot of the people executing them."
Isabella’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine humiliation crossing her features. She recovered with a tight, brittle nod. "Of course, Vincent. I'll see you in the study later."
She swept out of the room, her designer heels clicking angrily against the floor until the heavy doors shut behind her.
Vincent watched her leave, his dark eyes lingering on the closed door before shifting down to Duke, who had already settled back onto the rug, resting his heavy head against Maya’s boot.
"She bothers you," Vincent observed quietly, stepping closer to Maya.
"She speaks her mind," Maya replied honestly, looking down at the dog. "And she's not entirely wrong, Mr. Castellano. I am out of my depth here. Every person in this house—from Fletcher to the kitchen staff—knows I don't belong in this world. I'm a temporary fix for a permanent problem."
Vincent stopped two feet away from her. The air between them seemed to grow heavier, charged with an intensity that had nothing to do with estate politics or guarded dogs.
"Maya," Vincent said, his voice dropping into that low, magnetic register that made her breath hitch. "Look at me."
Maya lifted her eyes, meeting his dark, unblinking gaze.
"You are not a temporary fix," Vincent said slowly, each word deliberate and weighted with absolute conviction. "In my world, people are either assets or liabilities. Enemies or family. I do not keep stray pets, and I do not promote maids on a whim. The moment you stood in that courtyard and refused to let them break my dog, you proved you had more spine than half my syndicate board."
Maya swallowed hard, the heat rushing to her cheeks. "That... that was just instinct."
"Instinct is rare," Vincent replied, stepping closer still, until the scent of his cologne filled her senses completely. "And loyalty is even rarer. If Isabella—or anyone else in this house—ever speaks to you that way again, you have my permission to have Duke escort them off the property."
A genuine smile broke across Maya’s face, chasing away the tension in her shoulders. "I don't think Duke has the legal authority to handle trespassers, Mr. Castellano."
"You'd be surprised what authority my dog carries," Vincent murmured, a rare, faint smile touching the corners of his lips.
Before Maya could reply, the shrill ring of a secure satellite phone interrupted the quiet of the room. Vincent pulled the device from his coat pocket, his expression shifting instantly from personal warmth back to the cold, calculating mask of the mafia boss. He glanced at the caller ID, his jaw tightening.
"Excuse me," Vincent said softly, turning toward the window as he answered the call in rapid Italian.

Maya watched him walk away, her heart hammering against her ribs. She placed a hand on Duke’s warm head, feeling the steady, powerful heartbeat of the animal beneath her palm. She had survived her first week. She had earned the respect of the most dangerous man in the city.
But as she looked out across the sprawling, snow-covered gardens of the Castellano estate, a cold realization settled into her bones: Vincent Castellano had just invited her inside his fortress. And in a world built on blood, betrayal, and power, the walls protecting her were the very same walls that would trap her forever.
