Chapter 6 - The Golden LeashThree years later, the crisp autumn wind swept across the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley, turning the canopy of maples and oaks into a brilliant mosaic of crimson, gold, and amber.

The sprawling estate grounds, once a fortress of cold stone and untouchable fear, echoed with the joyful, high-pitched laughter of a two-year-old toddler chasing a butterfly across the south lawn.
Maya Castellano stood on the wide stone terrace, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and linen trousers, holding a steaming mug of spiced cider in her hands. Her dark hair was styled in loose waves, falling past her shoulders, and her eyes sparkled with a deep, radiant contentment that had entirely replaced the exhausted weariness of her early days as a maid.
Trotting slowly behind the toddler, keeping a vigilant, protective eye on every uncertain step, was Duke. Though his muzzle was frosting heavily with silver and his left hip still troubled him on damp mornings, his massive frame remained a towering symbol of unwavering loyalty. He stopped whenever the toddler stopped, offering his broad black head as a stabilizing support whenever the little girl wobbled on her unsteady legs.
Step. Step. Step.
Firm, warm arms wrapped around Maya’s waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, familiar chest. A soft kiss pressed gently against the nape of her neck, right below her ear.
"If you keep letting Leo feed the dog bacon off the breakfast table, Duke is going to out-weigh us both by Christmas," Vincent murmured, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.
Maya leaned back into his embrace, smiling as she handed him her mug of cider. Vincent wore a simple charcoal turtleneck, looking every bit the powerful syndicate patriarch, yet his dark eyes were impossibly soft as he watched his son play safely on the lawn.
"Duke earned his retirement bacon," Maya laughed softly, turning in his arms to wrap her own around his neck. "Besides, Leo is just making sure his best friend stays well-nourished."
Vincent chuckled, tightening his grip around her waist as he pulled her flush against him. "Three years ago, if someone had told me that the most feared enforcer in the tri-state area would spend his Saturday mornings watching a former maid and a 140-pound Cane Corso supervise a toddler in the garden, I would have put a bullet between their eyes."
"And instead, you gave me a job," Maya teased, her eyes dancing with mischief.
"I didn't give you a job, Maya," Vincent corrected her softly, his gaze turning intense and absolute. "I gave you a leash. And you managed to tame the most dangerous animal in New York—including the man who owned him."
Maya smiled, standing on her tiptoes to press a warm, lingering kiss to his lips. "You were never a wild animal, Vincent. You were just a castle waiting for someone brave enough to knock on the front door."

Out on the lawn, little Leo let out a joyous shriek as he tumbled onto the grass, and Duke immediately flopped down beside him, licking the toddler's face while letting out a happy, vibrating huff of canine contentment.
Vincent wrapped one arm around Maya’s shoulders, holding her tightly against his side as they watched the sun dip below the rolling hills of the valley, casting a warm, golden glow over the estate that would protect them—and the family they had built—for all the years to come.
