Chapter 4 - Shadows in the LibraryThe mahogany-paneled walls of the Castellano estate library absorbed sound so completely that even a whispered conversation felt like a secret whispered into a vault. Rows upon rows of leather-bound first editions stretched toward the high vaulted ceiling, illuminated only by the warm amber glow of a brass desk lamp and the flickering flames of a wood fire in the massive stone hearth.

Maya stood beside the reading table, carefully organizing a stack of veterinary reports and dietary schedules for Duke. Her fingers brushed the edge of a heavy leather ledger when a sudden, sharp sound echoed from the far end of the darkened corridor outside.

Clang.

It sounded like metal hitting marble—heavy, deliberate, and entirely out of place at two o'clock in the morning.

Duke, resting on his rug near the fireplace, instantly sprang to his feet. His ears pricked forward, his powerful body tensing into a coiled spring. He didn't bark; he let out a low, vibrating warning growl that resonated through the floorboards.

"Shh, boy. Easy," Maya whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

She reached down to grab the heavy brass poker from the hearth, not because she fancied herself a fighter, but because the absolute stillness of the mansion at night had suddenly turned hostile.

She stepped cautiously out of the library alcove into the dimly lit hallway. The runner carpet muffled her footsteps as she crept toward the grand staircase. The moon cast long, skeletal shadows across the dual landings, painting the portraits of past Castellano patriarchs in eerie shades of silver and black.

Footsteps sounded from the floor above—light, swift, and trying very hard to be silent.

Maya gripped the brass poker tighter, her knuckles turning white. She knew Vincent was away in New York handling an emergency summit with the commission, and most of the security detail was stationed along the perimeter gates. Whoever was inside the house had bypassed the biometric locks on the service elevators.

A soft click came from the direction of Vincent’s private study at the end of the hall.

The safe.

Maya didn't hesitate. She signaled to Duke with a sharp, low hand gesture she had practiced during their training sessions. "Heel, Duke. Quiet."

The massive Cane Corso moved like a ghost, his heavy paws making zero sound against the thick carpeting as he flanked Maya’s right side. Together, they crept down the corridor toward the half-open door of Vincent’s study. A sliver of amber light spilled out onto the Persian rug.

Maya peered cautiously around the doorframe.

Kneeling before the concealed wall safe behind the mahogany desk was a figure dressed entirely in black tactical gear, a balaclava pulled down over their face. The digital keypad glowed a soft blue as glowing numbers were punched in with practiced speed.

Maya recognized the distinct diamond-encrusted signet ring gleaming on the intruder's left pinky finger, poorly concealed beneath a tight leather glove.

Isabella.

Before Maya could process the betrayal, the safe door swung open with a pneumatic hiss, revealing stacks of bearer bonds, classified syndicate ledgers, and a heavy flash drive containing encrypted offshore bank routing numbers.

"Leaving so soon, Ms. Cross?" Maya’s voice cut through the silence of the study like a razor blade.

Isabella whipped around, her breath catching in her throat. She scrambled to her feet, her hand diving into her tactical vest and pulling out a compact, silenced automatic pistol, leveling it directly at Maya’s chest with chilling composure.

"You really don't know when to stay in your lane, do you, farm girl?" Isabella hissed, her eyes wild with panic and venom. "You should have stayed in the laundry room."

Maya didn't flinch, though every instinct screamed at her to run. She kept her eyes locked on the barrel of the gun. "Taking the boss's ledgers to the federal prosecutor or your new partners in Baltimore, Isabella? Does Vincent know you've been leaking shipping manifests for three months?"

Isabella’s face contorted with pure rage. Her finger whitened against the trigger. "Vincent is blind. And very soon, he'll be dead. All of his rivals have pooled their resources to dismantle this empire from the inside out—and you, Maya, are going to be the convenient narrative. A rogue domestic worker who stumbled into the master study, tried to steal classified assets, and was executed by loyal estate security before she could escape."

Isabella's finger began to squeeze the trigger.

Crash.

A dark, 140-pound missile hurled through the open doorway.

Duke didn't bark. He slammed directly into Isabella’s side with the kinetic force of a battering ram, knocking her violently against the bookshelves. The silenced pistol flew from her hand, spinning across the floor and skittering under the heavy oak desk.

Isabella screamed as Duke pinned her shoulders against the floor, his massive jaws hovering inches from her throat, emitting a deep, thunderous growl that shook the dust from the ceiling rafters.

Maya exhaled a breath she felt she had been holding for an eternity. Her knees trembled slightly, but she stepped forward, reaching down to retrieve the spilled flash drive and ledgers from the open safe.

She knelt beside Isabella, who was hyperventilating beneath the crushing weight of the Cane Corso.

"You underestimated the dog, Isabella," Maya said quietly, her voice entirely steady. "And you severely underestimated the man who owns him."

A sharp, piercing sound echoed from the front foyer downstairs.

Whir. Click.

The heavy iron front gates of the estate buzzed open, followed by the deep, unmistakable roar of a fleet of black Maybach engines pulling into the courtyard.

Vincent Castellano had returned early.
