Chapter 2 - The Departing ThreatUpstairs, the heavy thud of designer luggage hitting hardwood echoed through the east hall.

Vanessa Vale was not a woman who accepted defeat quietly. As she zipped her third leather valise, her phone buzzed against the marble vanity. She snatched it up, her manicured fingers tapping furiously across the screen.
The text was from an unknown, encrypted number: Is the package secured? Has Voss compromised the network?
Vanessa’s lips curled into a venomous sneer. She tapped out a quick reply: Voss is distracted by a stray brat and an undercover federal agent posing as a maid. Her name is Evelyn Hart. She’s been feeding intelligence to the State Organized Crime Bureau.
She hit send, locking her phone screen with a sharp click.
If Damian thought he could discard her like unwanted trash over a brat who spilled juice, he was gravely mistaken. She hadn't spent six months grooming the most powerful man in Chicago just to be tossed aside for a domestic employee. If she was going down, she was going to burn his entire empire to the ground on her way out.
Ten minutes later, Vanessa descended the grand staircase. Her white fur coat trailed over her shoulders, and her heels clicked sharply against the marble foyer.
Damian and Evelyn stood near the base of the stairs. Lily had been taken upstairs by Maria a few moments earlier, safely out of sight.
Vanessa stopped on the third step down, looking down at them with an expression of pure malice.
"Enjoy your little domestic reunion, Damian," Vanessa purred, adjusting her sunglasses indoors. "Because while you're playing house with a federal agent, the people who actually finance your empire are looking for a new partner."
Damian didn't move. He stood with his hands tucked into his trouser pockets, his gaze chillingly empty. "If you ever step foot on this property again, Vanessa, the federal indictment will be the least of your concerns. My men won't wait for a warrant."
Vanessa let out a sharp, brittle laugh. "You think you're untouchable. You think because you built this fortress, you're safe from what's coming. Wait until the board sees what I have to say about your little undercover pet."
With a final toss of her blonde hair, she pushed open the massive front doors, slammed them shut behind her, and climbed into waiting black town car that sped away into the winter mist.
Evelyn watched the doors close, a cold knot forming in her stomach. "She knows."
"She knows your name, and she knows you're federal," Damian said quietly, stepping closer to Evelyn. "Which means she’s already running to the highest bidder—likely the Paterson syndicate in New Jersey."
"If the Paterson syndicate gets their hands on my operational files, every informant I've cultivated over the past two years is dead," Evelyn said, her professional detachment completely shattering. "I have to call my handler. I have to blow my cover right now."
Damian reached out, his hand gripping her wrist with surprising gentleness.
"If you call your handler now, the Bureau raids this house within the hour," Damian said, his voice hard, yet steady. "They arrest me, they freeze my assets, and you and Lily become collateral damage in a public warzone. Is that what you want?"
May you like
"What choice do I have?" Evelyn demanded, pulling her arm away. "You're a criminal, Damian! Everything you built is built on stolen ground!"
"Maybe," Damian replied, his eyes locking onto hers with unyielding intensity. "But right now, I am the only person standing between your daughter and a syndicate hit squad that Vanessa just sold out. Work with me, Evelyn. Just for forty-eight hours. Let me clean up the mess in my own house."
