Chapter 6 - A New BalanceThree weeks later, federal courthouses in New York and Chicago were flooded with indictments, asset seizures, and conspiracy charges that effectively dismantled the Paterson syndicate and permanently neutralized Marcus Vance.

The charges against Damian Voss’s legitimate commercial holdings were quietly reviewed, reclassified, and settled through extensive corporate restructuring—a legal outcome engineered with surgical precision by the finest defense attorneys money could buy, backed by federal cooperation.
Inside the private study of the Voss estate, the winter snow had begun to melt, giving way to the pale, promising light of early spring.
Lily sat on the plush rug by the fireplace, happily coloring with a fresh pack of pink crayons while Nero—the massive Cane Corso who had guarded the halls through every storm—dozed peacefully beside her.
Evelyn stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a simple gray sweater and dark trousers. Her federal badge and credentials sat neatly in an open leather folder on the mahogany desk behind her. She had officially resigned from active field operations that morning, accepting a high-level advisory role within the Department of Justice’s corporate compliance division—a position that kept her in Chicago, and kept her safe.
The heavy oak door opened.
Damian walked in carrying two cups of black coffee. He set one on the desk and walked over to stand beside her, looking out at the immaculate lawn where the new security perimeter had been seamlessly blended into the estate's gardens.
"So," Damian said quietly, a faint, amused smile playing on his lips. "Agent Hart is officially unemployed."
"Consultant Hart," Evelyn corrected, turning to face him. "And don't sound so relieved. My new job gives me full clearance to audit every corporate tax return in the Midwest—starting with yours."
Damian laughed, a rich, genuine sound that had become entirely foreign to the criminal underworld he once dominated alone. He reached out, gently taking her hand.
"Audit me all you want," Damian murmured, his slate-gray eyes softening as he looked down at her. "Every asset I own is already in your name anyway."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow, though her heart did a familiar, dangerous flip in her chest. "Is that so?"
"It’s a security protocol," Damian replied smoothly, pulling her closer against his chest. "To ensure my favorite consultant never leaves the house again."
Lily looked up from her coloring book, squinting at them through her bangs. "Are you guys getting married or are you just arguing about paperwork?"

Evelyn and Damian exchanged a long, knowing look.
"A little bit of both, Bug," Evelyn smiled, leaning her head against Damian’s shoulder as the spring sunlight poured through the bulletproof glass, finally warming every cold corner of the house.
