Chapter 3 - The Syndicate’s UltimatumBy midnight, the atmosphere inside the Voss estate had shifted from domestic tension to a war room.

The security monitors in the lower-level bunker flashed with amber warning lights as encrypted data streams were intercepted by Damian’s tech specialists. Downstairs, Maria had put Lily to sleep in a secure, reinforced suite on the third floor, leaving Evelyn and Damian alone in the private study.

Evelyn stood over a mahogany desk covered in printed logs, shipping manifests, and financial transfers.

"Vanessa didn't just go to the Paterson syndicate," Evelyn said, her finger tracing a series of routing numbers on a tablet. "She went straight to Marcus Vance—Julian’s brother. They've been quietly buying up our debt portfolios across the Midwest."

Damian stood by the fireplace, nursing a glass of dark scotch, the flames casting sharp shadows across his face. "Marcus wants control of the Chicago shipping ports. He used Vanessa to get inside my perimeter, planting bugs and monitoring our communications for months."

"Which means they knew I was undercover before I even crossed the threshold today," Evelyn realized, her blood running cold. "The whole thing—Vanessa humiliating Lily, forcing her to scrub the floor—it wasn't just petty cruelty. It was a test. They wanted to see if I would break my cover."

"And you almost did," Damian noted quietly, his slate-gray eyes meeting hers. "If I hadn't walked through that door when I did, you would have put a bullet in her."

"I would have broken every bone in her body," Evelyn corrected without a shred of hesitation.

A rare, grim smile touched the corner of Damian’s mouth. "That is why you terrified every man in this organization while wearing a maid's apron, Evelyn. You have ice in your veins."

Before Evelyn could reply, the secure terminal on the desk beeped sharply.

A high-priority incoming transmission lit up the screen.

Damian stepped forward, tapping the receiver. "Put it on speaker."

A raspy, distorted voice filled the silent study: "Voss. I assume you noticed your lovely fiancée left a bit early tonight."

Marcus Vance.

Damian’s posture went rigid. "Marcus. You're a long way from New Jersey."

"And you're a long way from secure, Damian," Marcus laughed coldly over the line. "Word on the street is you've been harboring a federal agent in your kitchen while she plays house with your brat. But let's talk business. You hand over the Chicago shipping terminals by noon tomorrow, and we keep your little undercover federal pet breathing. Refuse, and we release her true identity—and her daughter's location—to every contract killer from here to the coast."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Silence descended on the study, heavy and suffocating.

Evelyn stared at the blinking terminal. The reality of the threat crashed down on her with terrifying clarity. It wasn't just about her anymore. It was about Lily.

"They know about my daughter," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling for the first time since she walked through the mansion doors. "They know where she sleeps."

Damian slammed his fist against the edge of the mahogany desk, the wood splintering slightly under the impact. His face was a mask of cold, murderous fury.

"They think they own the board," Damian said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal register. "They forgot who built these ports in the first place."
