Chapter 3 - The Bloodline of Ashford ManorThe silence that followed Julian’s words was so thick that the only sound left in the penthouse was the crackle of the fireplace.

"Your brother?" Mara whispered, her mind racing to connect the pieces of a puzzle she had been carrying her entire life. "You have a brother?"

"Gareth Ashford," Julian said, his tone dropping into a icy abyss. "My younger brother by two years. A man who has spent his entire life believing that everything I built, everything our father left behind, rightfully belonged to him."

Julian stood up and walked toward the massive glass window, staring down at the glowing lights of the city below.

"Twenty-three years ago," Julian continued, his back to Mara, "Ashford Enterprises was on the verge of a massive global merger. My father was failing in health, and he was preparing to name his successor. Everyone knew it was going to be me. I was young, ambitious, and ruthless in business. But then I met Celeste."

A soft, sad smile touched Julian’s lips for a brief moment as he stared at his own reflection in the glass.

"She worked at a small bakery three blocks from my office—a quiet place with green window frames and a creaking third step on the stairs," Julian murmured. "She didn't care about my money, my family name, or my executive title. She brought me back to life, Mara. She made me human. When I announced to my family that I was going to marry a baker’s daughter and make her the matriarch of Ashford Manor, Gareth went insane."

Julian turned back around, his face dark with fury.

"Gareth believed that marrying a woman without political or financial connections would destroy our family’s standing," Julian said. "He threatened to challenge my father’s will. He tried to bribe Celeste to leave. When she refused, he did something far worse."

Julian held up the tiny folded note written in Celeste’s handwriting.

"Two weeks before our wedding," Julian read from the paper, "Gareth came to Celeste’s apartment while I was away in London on business. He showed her forged financial documents framing her father for fraud. Then he held a gun to her stomach and told her that if she didn't disappear—if she ever tried to contact me again—he would have me killed in a 'car accident' and ensure her father died in prison. She was already two months pregnant with you, Mara."

Mara felt her throat lock up. Tears welled in her eyes as the cruel, agonizing truth of her mother’s life slammed into her.

All those years of constant moving, of hiding in cold, damp rooms, of sleeping with a chair jammed beneath the doorknob—Celeste hadn't been crazy or paranoid. She had been a terrified mother, sacrificing her own happiness, her love, and her comfort to protect her unborn daughter and the man she loved from a merciless monster.

"She suffered for twenty-three years," Mara choked out, a tear spilling over her cheek. "She lived in poverty... she died on a broken mattress in a room that smelled of damp mold... just to keep us alive."

Julian crossed the room in swift, powerful strides. He dropped to his knees right in front of Mara’s chair, taking both of her trembling hands in his.

"She protected you," Julian said, his dark eyes burning with fierce, absolute devotion. "And now it is my turn to protect you. You will never sell pies on a cold sidewalk again, Mara. You will never hunger, you will never fear, and you will never hide. You are an Ashford. You are my daughter."

Mara looked into Julian’s face—the same powerful jaw, the same determination, the same fierce spirit she saw in her own reflection every morning. The missing piece of her life had finally clicked into place, but with it came a terrifying weight.

"What about Gareth?" Mara asked softly. "What is he doing now?"

Julian’s eyes hardened into steel. "Gareth is currently the Vice Chairman of Ashford Enterprises. He lives in our family’s ancestral estate, spending my money, driving my cars, and believing he got away with destroying the only woman I ever loved."

Julian stood up, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone from his jacket pocket. He dialed a short three-digit code.

"Marcus," Julian spoke into the receiver. "Bring the armored Escalade to the hotel basement garage immediately. Call my private legal team, get my personal physician on standby, and alert the security detail at Sovereign Manor. We are bringing my daughter home tonight."

A voice spoke briefly through the phone's speaker. "Your daughter, Mr. Ashford?"

"My daughter and sole legal heir," Julian answered clearly, staring straight at Mara. "Mara Ashford."

Thirty minutes later, Mara was seated in the plush leather interior of a sleek black armored SUV, speeding through the rain-slicked streets toward the exclusive suburban enclave known as Sovereign Hill.

Beside her, Julian sat with a thick leather briefcase on his lap, making rapid, quiet calls to his private investigators, corporate accountants, and personal security staff. Sitting in the front passenger seat was Marcus—a burly, gray-haired former Special Forces officer who served as Julian’s chief of security.

"Gareth is currently hosting a high-society charity dinner at the Sovereign Manor, sir," Marcus reported, looking at a digital tablet. "Over a hundred prominent investors, city council members, and news executives are in attendance. His wife, Victoria, and their son, Tristan, are also present."

Julian looked out the window as the heavy iron gates of Sovereign Manor swung open, revealing a sprawling, illuminated French-gothic mansion sitting atop fifty acres of manicured lawns and fountains.

"Perfect," Julian said softly, his voice sharp enough to cut glass. "My brother always did love an audience."
