Chapter 5 - Unmasking the SerpentThe rain had stopped by three o'clock the following morning, leaving the grounds of Sovereign Manor shrouded in a thick, eerie river fog.

Inside the grand study of the estate, Julian and Mara sat across from Marcus and a team of three forensic cyber-investigators. On the wide mahogany desk sat Celeste’s silver locket, alongside the tiny steel key that had been hidden behind the silver roses.
"We found the safety deposit box, Mr. Ashford," one of the investigators reported, sliding a digital tablet across the desk. "The key from the locket opens Box #412 at the Old Harbor First National Bank—a bank that went out of business fifteen years ago, but whose vaults were acquired by our trust firm."
"What was inside the box?" Julian asked, his voice tense.
"Celeste Vale left behind a voice-recording cassette tape dated twenty-three years ago," the investigator answered. "Along with certified bank records showing blackmail payments Gareth made to a hitman named Thomas Vance—the man Gareth hired to intimidate Celeste into fleeing."
Mara reached out, her fingers brushing the cold glass of the tablet screen. "My mother kept the evidence... she kept it hidden all those years, waiting for the day someone would finally be strong enough to stand up to him."
Before Julian could answer, the heavy wooden doors of the study blew open with a violent crash.
Gareth stood in the doorway. He was no longer wearing his pristine tuxedo. His shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his eyes wild and bloodshot, holding a heavy blue-steel revolver in his trembling right hand. Behind him, Victoria and Tristan were nowhere to be seen—they had already fled the estate two hours prior with three suitcases of jewelry.
"GET AWAY FROM THE DESK!" Gareth roared, his voice cracked with absolute madness.
Marcus instantly reached for his hip holster, but Julian raised a hand, stopping him. Julian slowly stood up from his leather chair, placing himself directly between Gareth’s gun and Mara.
"Put the gun down, Gareth," Julian said calmly, his voice steady as rock. "You’re making this worse for yourself."
"Worse?!" Gareth shrieked, a terrifying, hysterical laugh tearing from his throat. "Worse than losing my title?! Worse than losing my money, my reputation, my house?! You took everything from me, Julian! Just like father took everything from me and gave it to you!"
"You did this to yourself," Mara said, stepping out from behind Julian’s shoulder, her gray eyes staring fearlessly at the barrel of the gun. "My mother begged you for mercy twenty-three years ago. She promised to leave quietly if you just let her child live. You chose to be a monster."
"Shut up! Shut up, you little rat!" Gareth screamed, his knuckles turning white as his finger tightened on the trigger. "You should have died in that damp alley with your pathetic mother! If I kill you both right now, there won't be anyone left to inherit! I'll take the money and leave the country!"
"You won't leave anywhere, Gareth," Julian said softly.
Julian raised his left wrist, tapping the digital face of his watch twice.
From the hallway outside the study, the sharp, thunderous sound of heavy tactical boots echoed across the marble floor, accompanied by the red and blue flashing lights reflecting off the high windows outside.
"STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPON!" a booming voice echoed through the hallway.
A tactical team of six state troopers armed with assault rifles burst through the study doors, their laser sights painting bright red dots directly across Gareth’s chest and forehead.
Gareth gasped, his eyes darting frantically from the laser sights to Julian’s calm, unyielding face. The realization of his absolute, total defeat smashed into him like an iron fist.
The gun slipped from his trembling, sweaty fingers, clattering loudly onto the hardwood floor.
Two state troopers slammed Gareth onto his knees, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

As they dragged the weeping, incoherent man past the desk, Julian looked at his brother one last time.
"Twenty-three years ago, you thought you destroyed my life, Gareth," Julian said, his voice cold and final. "You were wrong. My daughter is home. And you are going to die in a state prison."
