Chapter 4 - The Poisoned GalaThe grand ballroom of Sovereign Manor was a dazzling sea of crystal chandeliers, sparkling champagne flutes, and multi-thousand-dollar evening gowns.

Gareth Ashford, a fifty-year-old man with slicked-back dark hair, a thin, manicured mustache, and a tuxedo that cost more than a average car, stood near the center stage. He held a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon, laughing heartily surrounded by a circle of wealthy donors and city politicians.

Beside him stood his wife, Victoria—a sharp-featured woman draped in diamonds whose cold blue eyes constantly scanned the room for social climbing opportunities—and their twenty-two-year-old son, Tristan, an arrogant youth who had already wrecked three luxury sports cars without ever facing a single legal consequence.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" Gareth called out, tapping a silver spoon against his champagne glass, echoing through the cavernous marble hall. The chatter died down as the guests turned toward the stage.

"Thank you all for joining us tonight at the annual Ashford Endowment Gala," Gareth said, flashing a charming, practiced smile. "As Vice Chairman of Ashford Enterprises, I am proud to announce that our new commercial development project in the harbor district has just received full city approval—"

The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with a deafening bang that echoed off the high ceilings.

The music stopped instantly. A hundred heads turned toward the entrance.

Julian Ashford stepped into the ballroom.

He was no longer wearing his rain-soaked coat. He was dressed in a tailored black tuxedo, his posture towering and commanding. But what caught every breath in the room was not Julian.

It was the young woman walking beside him.

Mara wore an elegant, long-sleeved emerald green silk gown that Julian’s personal stylists had delivered to the car ten minutes prior. Her dark hair was styled into a sleek, dignified updo, highlighting her striking gray eyes, her refined jawline, and the faint flame-shaped birthmark above her right eyebrow. She held her head high, walking with the quiet, unshakeable grace of a queen stepping onto her own throne.

Whispers erupted across the ballroom like wildfire.

"Is that Julian?"

"Who is that girl with him?"

"Look at her face... she looks just like..."

Gareth’s charming smile froze instantly. The champagne glass in his hand trembled so violently that liquid spilled over the rim, dripping onto his pristine white cuff. His eyes locked onto Mara’s face—onto her pale blue-ringed pupils, her flame mark—and the ghost of Celeste Vale seemed to rise from the marble floor right before his eyes.

Victoria snapped open her silk fan, her face pale. "Gareth... who is that girl? Why is Julian bringing a street girl into our home?"

Julian walked down the central aisle, the crowd naturally parting before him like the Red Sea. Mara walked right beside him, her hand resting firmly on her father’s arm.

They stopped at the foot of the stage, looking up at Gareth.

"Julian," Gareth rasped, trying desperately to pull his scattered composure together. He forced a strained, unnatural laugh. "What... what is the meaning of this dramatic entrance? We are in the middle of a private foundation announcement—"

"I am here to make an announcement of my own, Gareth," Julian said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom.

Julian stepped onto the stage, taking the microphone directly from Gareth’s hand. He reached down, offering his hand to Mara, guiding her up to stand beside him at the podium.

"Twenty-three years ago," Julian spoke into the microphone, his dark eyes sweeping over the glittering crowd of city elites, "the woman I loved—Celeste Vale—vanished from this city. For twenty-three years, many of you in this room believed she abandoned me. My brother, Gareth, was particularly eager to spread that story."

Gareth’s breath hitched. "Julian, stop this nonsense right now! You're drunk, or you've lost your mind—"

"Shut your mouth, Gareth," Julian commanded, his tone dropping into a lethal, terrifying register that silenced the entire room.

Julian looked back at the crowd. "Tonight, by a miracle of God, my daughter returned to me. This is Mara Ashford. My biological child, my legitimate bloodline, and the sole heir to the Ashford fortune, Ashford Enterprises, and every piece of property bearing my name."

A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Cameras began to flash frantically as journalists and guests pulled out their phones.

Tristan, Gareth’s son, stepped forward angrily, his face red with indignation. "This is absurd! You can't just bring some random street girl in off the rain and claim she's an Ashford! She's an imposter! A fraud trying to steal our family’s inheritance!"

Mara turned her head slowly, looking Tristan dead in the eye.

"I spent my entire life starving in basement apartments because your father threatened to murder my mother," Mara said, her voice clear, strong, and resounding through the speakers. "I don't care about your family’s money, Tristan. But I am an Ashford. And I have my mother’s eyes to prove it."

Gareth panicked. He stepped toward the microphone, his hands shaking violently. "Security! Remove these people! My brother has had a mental breakdown! Security!"

Not a single security guard moved.

Marcus and four heavily armed guards from Julian’s personal detail stepped onto the stage, positioning themselves between Gareth and the microphone, effectively boxing Gareth and his family into the corner of the stage.

"Your security guards work for Ashford Enterprises, Gareth," Julian said softly, stepping closer to his pale, trembling brother. "And as of twenty minutes ago, the board of directors convened an emergency voting session via video link. With my seventy percent controlling share, you have been officially stripped of your position as Vice Chairman."

Gareth backed away until his spine hit the wooden grand piano behind him. "You... you can't do this to me, Julian! I'm your brother!"

"You stopped being my brother the night you put a gun to a pregnant woman's stomach," Julian whispered, leaning in so close that only Gareth could hear his next words. "Enjoy your final night in this house, Gareth. Because tomorrow morning, the federal prosecutors are arriving with a warrant for your arrest."
