Chapter 4 - The Haven of Serpents

The Vescari Estate sat high on the rocky cliffs of Blackwood Ridge, overlooking the dark, churned waters of the Hudson River. Surrounded by fifteen-foot stone walls, security cameras, and armed guards, it was less of a residence and more of an impenetrable fortress.

For two weeks, the estate was completely locked down.

Elena sat in the library on the second floor, a grand room filled with floor-to-ceiling leather books, dark mahogany furniture, and a massive stone fireplace that crackled warmly against the chilly rain outside.

She wore a soft cashmere sweater and dark trousers provided by the estate staff. She was no longer wearing her nurse’s scrubs, but her carpetbag was full of medical supplies, and her routine hadn't changed.

Every three hours, she checked Luca’s wounds, changed his dressings, and administered his nerve recovery therapy.

The heavy double doors of the library opened, and Luca stepped inside.

He was dressed in a charcoal silk shirt and tailored black trousers. His gait was steady now, his massive frame recovering with terrifying speed under Elena’s meticulous care. The harshness in his face remained, but whenever his eyes landed on Elena, the coldness vanished.

“You’re up late,” Luca said softly, walking over to the fireplace and leaning against the mantle.

“I was reviewing your blood work from this morning,” Elena replied, closing the file in her lap. “Your inflammatory markers are almost back to normal. You’ll be fully recovered in two weeks.”

Luca looked down at her, a strange, profound expression in his gray eyes. “And then what, Elena?”

Elena froze slightly. She looked into the dancing flames of the fireplace. “Then... I suppose I go back to my life. To the hospital.”

“You can’t go back to St. Jude’s,” Luca said quietly, stepping toward her chair. “The board covered up Vane’s disappearance, but Marco’s men still know who you are. The moment you step outside these gates without my protection, you become a target.”

“I can’t stay in your fortress forever, Luca,” Elena said, looking up into his formidable face. “I’m a nurse. My life is about saving people. Your life... your world is about something entirely different.”

Luca knelt down in front of her chair.

The sight of the city’s most feared underworld ruler kneeling before a rookie nurse would have shocked the five syndicates to their core. But Luca didn't care. He reached out, taking her hands into his broad, calloused palms.

“Do you know why Marco tried to kill me, Elena?” Luca asked softly.

Elena shook her head.

“Ten years ago, when I took over this family from my father, I made a vow,” Luca explained, his voice deep and steady. “I cut off human trafficking. I banned narcotics sales in our neighborhoods. I turned our operations toward legitimate shipping, construction, and green energy.”

Elena’s eyes widened in surprise.

“Marco hated it,” Luca continued. “He wanted the fast, filthy money from drugs and vice. He allied with the Russian syndicates to put a bullet in my chest so he could tear down everything I built. I am not a saint, Elena. I have blood on my hands. But I protect my people. And I protect what is right.”

He squeezed her hands gently, his silver eyes burning with an intensity that made Elena’s breath hitch in her throat.

“When you put that needle in my chest,” Luca murmured, “you didn't just save a man’s life. You saved thousands of families who depend on my protection. You are the heart of this house now, Elena.”

Elena looked into his eyes, seeing the absolute sincerity, the honor, and the profound vulnerability he showed only to her. The barrier she had built between her world and his began to crumble into dust.

“Luca...” she whispered.

Before she could speak further, the door burst open.

Matteo stepped inside, his face grave. “Lord Vescari. Marco has surfaced. He called an emergency meeting of the Conclave at the Brooklyn Docks for midnight. He claims he has your signed death certificate and is preparing to take total control of the syndicate.”

Luca stood up slowly, his body radiating lethal power once again.

“Let him call the meeting,” Luca said softly. “It’s time to show the Conclave what happens when you try to bury a living king.”
