Chapter 6 - A Heartbeat to Keep

Six months later.

The sun shone brilliant and gold over the Hudson River, warming the stone terrace of the Vescari Estate.

The dark shadows of the past were completely gone. Marco Vescari and Dr. Malcolm Vane were serving life sentences in maximum-security federal prison, their corrupt networks completely dismantled.

Under Luca’s undisputed leadership, the Vescari Syndicate had completed its total transition into legitimate enterprises.

More importantly, the Marlowe Medical Center had opened its doors in downtown New York—a state-of-the-art trauma facility funded entirely by the Vescari Foundation, providing free emergency care to underprivileged families across the city.

Elena stood on the edge of the cliffside terrace, looking out at the glittering water. She wore a stunning ivory lace dress that caught the soft afternoon breeze, her dark hair pinned back with small pearl clips.

Heavy, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Luca pulled her back against his broad chest, resting his chin on her shoulder. He wore a tailored black tuxedo, looking noble, powerful, and utterly relaxed.

“You look breathtaking, Elena,” Luca whispered into her ear, his deep voice vibrating warmly against her skin.

Elena smiled, leaning back against him, covering his hands with hers. “Dr. Vane thought he was declaring your death that night in Bay 4. He had no idea he was actually starting my life.”

Luca turned her around gently in his arms, looking down into her hazel eyes with an intense, boundless devotion that made her heart soar.

“Every night for thirty years, I woke up expecting a bullet,” Luca murmured softly. “I thought my life would end in some dark alley, surrounded by enemies. But then I opened my eyes in that trauma room... and I saw an angel holding my pulse in her hands.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

Inside sat a breathtaking ring—a flawless three-carat diamond framed by small, brilliant rubies shaped in a delicate heartbeat rhythm across the platinum band.

“Elena Marlowe,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a tender, trembling register. “You saved my body. You saved my soul. Will you give me your heartbeat for the rest of my life?”

Tears of pure joy welled in Elena’s eyes. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes, Luca,” she whispered, standing up on her tiptoes. “Yes! A thousand times yes!”

Luca slid the ring onto her finger, then pulled her into a deep, passionate kiss as the afternoon sun broke through the clouds, bathing the cliffside in brilliant, golden light.

From the terrace doors, Matteo and the rest of the Vescari family clapped and cheered, raising their glasses in toast to their Regent and the brilliant, brave nurse who had taught the dark underworld how to feel a heart beat again.
