Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Docks

Pier 42 was a dark, cavernous warehouse stretching three hundred feet over the black waters of the East River.

Outside, rain poured in sheets, rattling against the corrugated steel roof. Inside, fifty high-ranking members of the Five Syndicates sat along a long iron table. At the head of the table sat Marco Vescari, dressed in a white suit, drinking vintage champagne.

Beside him stood Dr. Malcolm Vane, looking nervous, clutching a thick leather dossier containing Luca’s falsified medical records.

“My friends!” Marco boomed into the microphone, his voice echoing through the dark warehouse. “Tonight we mourn my tragic cousin, Luca Vescari! His death leaves a void—but as his legal successor, I will restore our family’s true profitability! Starting tonight, the drug routes through Port Newark are reopened!”

A cheer went up from several corrupt lieutenants.

“Is that so, Marco?”

A voice cut through the noise like a steel blade slicing through silk.

The heavy steel doors at the front of the warehouse were violently blown off their hinges by a controlled explosive breach!

BOOM!

Smoke and fire poured into the hall. Through the haze walked Luca Vescari.

He wore a long black leather overcoat, his gray eyes flashing like thunder. Beside him walked Matteo, flanked by fifty heavily armed Vescari loyalists.

And walking right by Luca’s side—wearing a crisp, professional dark suit and carrying a medical briefcase—was Elena Marlowe.

Panic erupted across the warehouse!

Marco fell backward out of his chair, his champagne glass shattering on the concrete! “No... NO! You’re dead! Vane signed the certificate! You were buried!”

“Dr. Vane is a murderer who took five million dollars of your stolen money, Marco!” Elena’s clear, powerful voice rang out across the hall, completely silencing the room.

She stepped forward, pulling a stack of certified toxicological reports and audio recordings from her briefcase.

“I am Nurse Elena Marlowe from St. Jude’s Trauma Center,” she declared bravely, her hazel eyes glaring at the terrified Dr. Vane. “On the night of the attack, Dr. Vane deliberately injected Luca Vescari with Vecuronium to simulate brain death! He falsified three previous autopsies for former family bosses who 'died' of sudden heart failure!”

Elena pointed directly at Dr. Vane. “Check his offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands! Every time a Vescari leader died under his care, Marco transferred one million dollars into his private trust!”

The syndicate leaders at the table instantly stood up, drawing their weapons, pointing them straight at Marco and Dr. Vane!

“Is this true, Marco?!” Don Castiglione screamed, his face turning purple with rage. “You murdered your own blood using a dirty doctor?!”

“It’s a lie!” Marco shrieked, scrambling behind his guards. “Kill them! Kill them all!”

Marco’s loyalists opened fire!

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Luca instantly pulled Elena behind a heavy concrete pillar, covering her body with his massive frame as bullets chipped concrete from the walls!

“Stay here!” Luca ordered her, his voice fierce with protection.

“Be careful!” Elena gasped, pulling his collar down and pressing a fierce, desperate kiss against his lips.

Luca’s eyes flared with unyielding power. He pulled two heavy sidearms from his coat, stepped out from behind the pillar, and moved into the battlefield like a dark god of war.

The battle was swift and decisive.

Luca’s loyalists overrun Marco’s mercenaries within minutes. Matteo disarmed Dr. Vane, slamming the dirty doctor face-first onto the concrete table, handcuffing him to the steel framework.

Marco sprinted for the rear exit leading to the river docks, but Luca caught him at the edge of the pier.

Luca grabbed Marco by the throat, lifting his cousin off his feet over the cold, swirling water below.

“Luca... please!” Marco choked out, his eyes bulging with terror. “We’re family! Blood!”

“You forgot what blood means, Marco,” Luca said coldly. “You tried to use a doctor’s needle to steal what you couldn't take with honor.”

Luca tossed Marco backward onto the wooden deck, where Matteo’s men immediately bound him in iron chains to await the Conclave’s justice.

Luca turned back to the warehouse.

Elena was stepping through the smoke, her eyes searching for him. The moment she saw him standing unharmed against the rain-slicked dock, she ran to him.

Luca caught her in his arms, pulling her tight against his chest, holding her as if she were the only real thing in a world of violence.
