Chapter 4 - The Game of Mirrors

The weeks that followed were a chess match. Dante began systematically dismantling the Graves family empire, using the evidence Clara had found to freeze their assets and expose their corruption to the board of directors.

It was dangerous work. There were threats against the estate, cars following them in the city, and the constant feeling that the walls were closing in.

Dante insisted that Clara and Lili stay at the estate. He began spending more time with them—really spending time. He read to Lili at night. He ate dinner with them in the kitchen, not the formal dining room.

Clara watched him change. The cold, unapproachable billionaire was melting away, revealing a man who was deeply wounded but desperately wanted to be whole.

One night, after Lili had fallen asleep, Clara found Dante on the terrace. He was looking out over the city lights, a glass of whiskey in his hand.

"They're going to strike back," Clara said, joining him. "I can feel it."

"I know," Dante said, turning to her. He set his glass down. "I have something for you."

He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket. Clara froze.

"This isn't what you think," he said quickly, though his eyes burned. "Or maybe it is. I don't know anymore. I just know that I have spent my life surrounding myself with people who wanted my power, not my heart. You... you saw the man behind the money. You saw the ghost of the boy who missed his mother."

He opened the box. It held a simple, elegant locket. Inside was a tiny picture of his mother, and on the back, an engraving: To those who protect the truth.

"You saved me, Clara," he said. "In more ways than one."

Clara touched the locket, her heart soaring. "I just wanted to do what was right."

"The world is full of people who do what is right and get punished for it," Dante said, stepping closer, closing the distance between them. "I intend to change that."

He leaned in, his lips brushing against hers—a tentative, hopeful kiss that tasted of whiskey and promises. It was the first time he had truly allowed himself to be vulnerable, and in that moment, Clara knew there was no going back.
