Chapter 2 - The Encryption WarBy 2:00 AM, the storm outside had intensified, pounding against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of Dominic Vale’s private sanctuary on the top floor of his estate.

The room was bathed in the harsh, blue glow of multiple high-powered monitors. Dominic’s personal cybersecurity elite—a pair of silent, brilliant twins named Leo and Jonah—worked feverishly at a reinforced steel table, their fingers flying across custom mechanical keyboards like concert pianists.

Dominic sat in his high-backed leather armchair, a glass of dark amber whiskey resting untouched on the desk beside him. Across from him, wrapped in a plush cashmere throw Dominic had personally thrown over her shoulders, sat Grace. Her bruised wrists were cleanly dressed with sterile gauze, and a hot cup of tea sat before her, though she hadn't touched it either.

Her eyes were fixed on the central monitor, where complex lines of cryptographic algorithms were cascading down the screen in real-time.

"It's a triple-layer military cipher," Leo said, his eyes never leaving the screen. "Biometric, keyphrase, and time-synced dynamic token. Whoever built this drive didn't want a standard hacker getting through. If we force a brute-entry attempt, the drive initiates an internal thermite pulse that melts the flash chip in under three seconds."

Dominic swirled the whiskey in his glass, his eyes cold. "Arthur always was paranoid. He spent three years in intelligence procurement before he took over the family finances. Can you breach it?"

"We can," Jonah said, leaning back and rubbing his tired eyes. "But we need the secondary keyphrase. It's a localized phrase—something specific to the creator. Something personal."

Dominic frowned, looking over at Grace. "Did your father ever mention a specific code or passphrase Arthur used when they were doing business?"

Grace leaned forward, her dark eyes reflecting the blue monitor light as she searched her memory. "When my father was still running Mercer Logistics, he kept a journal. In the last entry before he died, he wrote a single line in Latin that made no sense at the time: 'Aquila non capit muscas.'"

Dominic’s head snapped toward her. "The eagle does not catch flies."

"It was the Vale family crest motto under my grandfather," Dominic said, his voice tightening. "Arthur hated that motto. He always said my father was too arrogant, acting like an eagle while ignoring the 'flies' beneath his feet."

Jonah’s fingers blurred across the keys, inputting the Latin phrase in various combinations of uppercase, dynamic shifting, and reversed syntax.

Suddenly, a loud, sharp BEEP echoed through the quiet room.

The cascading lines of green code vanished, replaced by a simple, clean interface displaying three massive folder directories labeled: PROJECT LAKEFRONT, MERCER LIQUIDATION, and SYNDICATE PORT TRANSFERS.

"We're in," Leo whispered, his voice laced with awe.

Dominic stood up slowly, his tall, imposing frame towering over the desk as he leaned over Leo's shoulder. Grace stood beside him, her arm brushing against his, her breath catching in her throat as the truth of her father's destruction finally unspooled before her eyes.

Leo clicked on MERCER LIQUIDATION.

A series of scanned bank transfers, forged signatures, and confidential wire logs filled the screen. There it was—in black and white. Arthur Vale had systematically siphoned sixteen million dollars from Thomas Mercer’s credit lines using forged authorization letters bearing Dominic’s stolen digital signature. Once Mercer Logistics was defaulted, Arthur bought up the company's assets for pennies on the dollar through a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands.

"It was all Arthur," Grace whispered, her voice trembling with five years of suppressed grief and rage. Tears welling in her eyes glistened under the monitor light. "He ruined my father... he drove him to a heart attack..."

Dominic looked at her, seeing the raw, agonizing pain on her face. Without hesitation, he reached out, his broad hand cupping the back of her head, pulling her gently against his side. Grace didn't pull away; she leaned into his firm, solid heat, burying her face against the lapel of his tailored suit as a single tear escaped down her cheek.

"I promised you the truth, Grace," Dominic murmured into her dark hair, his voice low and fiercely tender. "Now you have it. And I promise you something else: Arthur Vale will pay back every single cent he took from your family, with interest."

Grace wiped her cheek, pulling back slightly to look up into his icy gray eyes. "Look at the next folder. PROJECT LAKEFRONT."

Leo opened the second directory.

Dominic’s breath hitched.

The Lakefront memorandum wasn't just a business acquisition. It was a massive land-grab scheme designed to hand over the entire eastern shipping terminal of Chicago to the Toronto syndicate—the same syndicate that held Vanessa Caldwell’s father by the throat. Arthur hadn't just been stealing from the family; he was preparing a complete hostile takeover of Vale Enterprises, scheduled to execute on the night of Dominic and Vanessa’s wedding.

"The wedding was the anchor," Dominic realized, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet growl. "Once Vanessa and I signed the marital asset agreement, Arthur’s shell companies would automatically assume joint power-of-attorney over the port land. If I died in an 'unfortunate accident' shortly after the wedding, Vanessa would inherit the estate, and Arthur would take full control of the ports."

"And Vanessa knew?" Grace asked.

"Vanessa knew enough to follow orders," Dominic spat. "She was saving her father’s skin at the expense of mine."

Suddenly, the encrypted terminal let out a sharp, high-pitched alarm. A red banner flashed across the top of all three screens: EXTERNAL ACCESS ATTEMPT DETECTED – LOCATION: RIVER NORTH OFFICE.

"Someone just tried to wipe the server remotely!" Jonah yelled, his fingers flying across the keys as he fought off the digital intrusion. "They realized the USB drive was accessed! They're purging the secondary databases at your uncle's downtown headquarters right now!"

Dominic didn't panic. His face transformed into an unyielding mask of war.

"Marcus!" Dominic shouted toward the hallway.

The security chief pushed through the doors instantly. "Boss?"

"Mobilize the strike team. We're going to the River North office," Dominic commanded, reaching into his desk drawer and pulling out a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol, checking the magazine with a practiced, metallic clack. "Arthur knows the drive is open. He’s running."

"I'm coming with you," Grace asserted immediately, stepping forward.

Dominic paused, turning to stare at her. "No. It’s too dangerous. Arthur's men will be armed and desperate."

"My father's name is on those files, Dominic!" Grace argued fiercely, stepping right into his space, her dark eyes flashing with unyielding courage. "I spent three years hiding in your house for this moment. I am not sitting in this room like a helpless victim while you finish my fight!"

Dominic stared at her for three long, breathless seconds. He had spent his whole life surrounded by people who bowed to his power or sought to leech off his success. He had never met a woman who looked into the eye of a storm and walked straight into it.

A slow, dangerous smile crept onto Dominic Vale’s face.

"Marcus," Dominic said, racking the slide of his pistol and holstering it inside his jacket. "Get Miss Mercer a Kevlar vest and a weapon from the armory. If she’s coming to a war, she’s coming prepared."
