Chapter 5 - The ReckoningThree weeks later.

The morning sun broke brightly over the Chicago skyline, casting a golden light across the calm, blue expanse of Lake Michigan.
The grand courtrooms of the Dirksen Federal Building were packed to absolute capacity. Journalists, syndicate representatives, and high-society elites leaned forward in their seats as the head of the United States Attorney’s Office read through the seventy-two-page federal indictment.
Sitting at the defense table in orange prison jumpsuits were Arthur Vale, Vanessa Caldwell, and her father, Richard Caldwell.
Arthur’s face was bruised, his arm held in a heavy white cast, his arrogant demeanor completely shattered as he listened to the endless list of charges: racketeering, corporate fraud, attempted murder, wire fraud, and grand treason.
Behind the prosecution table sat Dominic Vale.
He looked immaculate in a tailored midnight-blue suit, his hair neatly styled, the faint scar on his cheek adding a dangerous, distinguished air to his powerful presence. Beside him, dressed in an elegant ivory silk suit that highlighted her natural, breathtaking beauty, sat Grace Mercer.
She was no longer the invisible maid sweeping the library floor. She was the star witness for the federal government—the woman whose courage and sharp intelligence had systematically disassembled one of the largest corporate crime rings in Midwest history.
"In light of the overwhelming digital evidence and physical testimony provided by Miss Grace Mercer," the federal judge announced, his voice booming through the silent courtroom, "this court denies bail for all defendants. Trial date is set for November."
The courtroom erupted into a frenzy of flashing cameras and shouting reporters as the bailiffs cuffed Arthur, Vanessa, and Richard Caldwell, leading them away toward the holding cells.
Vanessa turned her head as she was led past the gallery, her eyes locking onto Dominic and Grace. Her eyes were red, filled with tears of pure bitter regret as she saw Dominic’s hand resting gently over Grace’s on the wooden railing—a simple, public gesture of protection that he had never once offered to Vanessa during their entire engagement.
Dominic didn't even look at her as she was led away. His world began and ended with the woman sitting beside him.
Outside the courthouse, a wall of reporters swarmed the grand stone steps, shoving microphones forward as Dominic and Grace descended toward a waiting black limousine.
"Mr. Vale! Is it true that Vale Enterprises is liquidating its offshore holdings?"
"Miss Mercer! Will you be taking over the assets of Mercer Logistics?"
Dominic stopped at the foot of the stairs, turning to face the crowd of journalists. He held up a single hand, and the roaring media circus instantly fell into a breathless hush.
"Vale Enterprises is undergoing a complete structural overhaul," Dominic announced, his powerful voice carrying over the crowd with absolute authority. "Every legitimate asset stolen from Thomas Mercer over the last five years has been legally restored to his estate. Effective today, Mercer Logistics will be fully reinstated as an independent freight entity—under the sole ownership and leadership of Chief Executive Officer Grace Mercer."
A gasp went through the crowd of journalists, camera shutters clicking at a frantic pace.
Grace looked up at Dominic, her eyes wide with shock and deep emotion. He hadn't told her this part of the plan.
Dominic turned to her, his cold gray eyes softening into a look of profound, unconditional warmth as he looked down at her face.
"And as for my personal life," Dominic continued, his voice ringing loud and clear for the entire city to hear, "I spent many years believing that power was built on control. I was wrong. True power is finding the person who stands beside you when everything else burns to the ground."
He reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small black velvet box.
Before the entire press corps of Chicago, the formidable Wolf of Chicago dropped to one knee on the marble steps of the federal court.
The reporters collectively held their breath.
Dominic opened the box, revealing a breathtaking, five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the morning sunlight like a beacon of pure light.
"Grace Mercer," Dominic said softly, his voice trembling slightly with raw emotion as he held her gaze. "You entered my home as a ghost seeking justice. You became my savior, my partner, and my equal. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled down Grace’s cheeks. She let out a soft, breathless laugh, dropping to her knees on the marble steps right in front of him, wrapping her arms around his broad neck, and pulling his face to hers.

"Yes," Grace whispered fiercely against his lips. "Yes, Dominic. A thousand times yes."
The crowd on the courthouse steps erupted into thunderous applause and cheers as Dominic slipped the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a passionate, lingering kiss that sealed their victory before the world.
