Chapter 3 - The Anatomy of a Betrayal

Dawn broke over the Grayport harbor, painting the sky in bruised shades of violet and slate gray as Damian’s armored SUV pulled up outside the nondescript brick warehouse that served as their true operational headquarters.

Declan, Damian’s hulking, silver-haired head of security, was waiting by the reinforced iron gates. He took one look at Damian’s torn tuxedo and blood-soaked sleeve, and his face hardened into stone.

"Sloane’s clean-up crew?" Declan asked as they stepped out into the cold morning mist.

"Inside the hotel," Damian replied curtly, walking briskly toward the security entrance. "And the leak is confirmed. Sarah Jenkins."

Declan’s expression darkened further. He didn't look surprised; in the underworld, everyone had a price or a weakness. "We pulled her digital footprint an hour ago. Three hundred thousand dollars wired from a Cayman shell company tied directly to Sloane hit her personal account forty-eight hours ago."

They walked into the central command room—a cavernous space filled with banks of monitors, tactical maps, and glowing server racks. Claire sat down at her terminal, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with cold, precise fury. If Sarah had betrayed them, she was going to do it with an audit trail that would send her to a federal prison for the rest of her natural life.

"She’s scheduled to arrive at the office in twenty minutes," Claire said, her voice devoid of emotion as lines of financial data scrolled across her screen. "She thinks we still suspect a random logistics glitch."

"Let her walk right into the trap," Damian said, shrugging off his ruined jacket and letting Declan patch a fresh bandage over his torn shoulder. "We’re going to dismantle Sloane’s entire financial network using her terminal as the access point."

"How?" Claire asked, looking up.

"Sarah’s login credentials have master-level clearance across all three of Sloane’s primary laundering fronts," Damian explained, a dark, calculating smile touching his lips. "We don't just expose her; we use her access to freeze every single offshore account Sloane owns before the stock market opens at nine."

It was a high-risk, high-reward gambit. If Sarah realized she was caught too early, she could burn their access codes and lock them out permanently.

At precisely 8:55 AM, the double doors of the executive bullpen clicked open.

Sarah Jenkins walked in, carrying her usual leather briefcase and wearing a pastel cardigan that made her look like a mild-mannered schoolteacher. She froze the moment she saw Damian standing by the window, his arms crossed over his chest, and Claire sitting rigidly at her desk.

"Mr... Mr. Cole? Miss Bennett?" Sarah stammered, her face instantly draining of all color. "You're... you're here early."

"We've been here all night, Sarah," Claire said quietly, spinning her monitor around to display the bank transfer records in glowing red text.

Sarah stared at the screen, her knees buckling slightly as she grabbed the edge of a filing cabinet for support. Her breath came in short, terrified gasps. "I... I had no choice. They took my husband. They said if I didn't authorize the transfer codes, I’d never see him alive again—"

"You should have come to us," Damian said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm register. "We take care of our own, Sarah. But you chose to sell out the people who protected you."

Before Sarah could beg further, Declan stepped out from the side office, holding a pair of heavy zip-ties. "Federal agents are waiting downstairs, boss. Wire fraud, conspiracy, and aiding a criminal enterprise."

As Declan led the weeping analyst away, the heavy metal door clicked shut, leaving Damian and Claire alone in the quiet hum of the server room.

"Phase one is complete," Claire said, turning back to her keyboard. "Now let's finish him."
