Chapter 5 - The Final Stand

By noon, the rain had cleared, leaving the Grayport waterfront gleaming under a pale autumn sun.
Damian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his top-floor office, watching the street below. He didn't have to wait long. A convoy of three black sedans pulled up haphazardly in front of the building, and Graham Sloane stepped out, flanked by four armed enforcers who looked ready for a firefight.
"They’re here," Damian said calmly, turning away from the window and reaching into his desk drawer to retrieve a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol, checking the magazine with a familiar, mechanical click.
Claire stood up from her desk, her expression completely steady. "Do you want me to call the federal marshals?"
"No need," Damian replied, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Federal marshals are already securing the lobby. Sloane walked right into a federal trap."
Before Claire could respond, the private elevator chime echoed through the floor.
Ding.
The heavy brass doors slid open.
Graham Sloane strode out, his pristine white dinner jacket now rumpled, his face dark with murderous intent. He raised a silver-plated pistol, pointing it directly at Damian’s chest.
"It ends here, Cole," Sloane hissed, his voice trembling with fury. "You think you can outsmart me? You think a few spreadsheets and federal acronyms can erase forty years of blood on this waterfront?"
"You forgot one fundamental rule, Graham," Damian said, walking slowly out from behind his desk, his own weapon held steady and low. "You never start a war you haven't calculated the cost of."
Sloane’s finger twitched on the trigger. "Die, you arrogant—"
Before Sloane could fire, the doors behind him chimed again.
Four heavily armed federal agents, led by Declan, poured out of the elevator, their tactical rifles raised and locked onto Sloane’s men.
"Drop the weapon, Mr. Sloane! Federal agents!" shouted the lead agent, the red laser sights painting Sloane’s chest in a web of crimson dots.
Sloane froze. He looked from the armed agents to Damian, realizing with sudden, crushing horror that every move he had made today had been anticipated, anticipated, and funneled into a legal trap from which there was no escape.
His pistol clattered uselessly against the polished hardwood floor.
Declan stepped forward, kicking the weapon away and slamming the silver cuffs onto Sloane’s wrists with practiced efficiency.
As the rival crime boss was dragged away, cursing and thrashing between the federal marshals, the heavy office doors clicked shut once more, restoring absolute silence to the executive suite.
Damian let out a long, slow breath, lowering his weapon and setting it back onto the desk. He turned to look at Claire, who was calmly closing her laptop and organizing her files into a secure leather folder.
"Well," Damian murmured, a genuine, tired smile finally breaking through his hard exterior. "It looks like your resignation is officially denied, Miss Bennett."
Claire looked up from her screen, a matching smile touching her lips as she walked over to stand beside him, looking out over the magnificent view of the Grayport harbor.

"That’s unfortunate, Mr. Cole," she replied softly, her hand brushing against his fingers. "Because I was already planning to negotiate a very substantial raise, plus full medical coverage for surviving your family drama."
Damian chuckled, wrapping his arm securely around her waist and pulling her close against his side. "Name your price, Claire. After all... we have an entire city to run."
