Chapter 3 - The Siege of BrooklynFire and LoyaltyThe tranquil atmosphere of the penthouse shattered in an instant.

Jared stood up gracefully, his entire demeanor shifting from quiet intimacy to the terrifying, commanding presence of a war general. He pulled a concealed black sidearm from a holster under the sofa table, checking the chamber with a single, practiced flick of his wrist.

"How many?" Jared asked Miles.

"Three SUV loads. Twelve armed men entering through the underground garage," Miles reported, pulling his own weapon. "They cut the main power lines to the building ten seconds ago."

The lights in the penthouse flickered and died, plunging the vast space into darkness, lit only by the distant red emergency lights and the moon shining through the floor-to-ceiling glass.

Titan stood up immediately, let out a deep, chest-throbbing growl, his hackles raised, stepping directly in front of Willa.

Willa scrambled to her feet, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was no stranger to fear, but the cold, clinical violence that was about to breach this room was unlike anything she had ever known.

Jared stepped in front of her, his large body completely shielding her from the main entrance. He reached back, his hand grasping hers, his fingers warm, hard, and unshakeable.

"Miles," Jared ordered calmly. "Take Willa and Titan through the panic door in the master study. Get them to the subterranean bunker."

"No!" Willa gasped, her grip tightening on his hand instinctively. "What about you?!"

Jared turned his head slightly, his dark eyes catching the red emergency glow. A cold, dangerous smile touched his lips. "This is my house, Willa. They made a mistake coming here."

"Jared, please—"

"Go!" he commanded.

Miles grabbed Willa’s arm, leading her rapidly through the dark corridor. Titan paced alongside them, his massive body pressed against Willa’s hip, guarding her step for step.

They reached the master study. Miles pulled a heavy leather-bound book on the bookshelf, and a seamless hidden steel door slid open with a soft metallic click. Inside was a brightly lit, reinforced elevator shaft leading deep into the bedrock beneath the skyscraper.

"Get in," Miles urged, pushing the floor button. "I’m going back to assist the Boss."

"Miles, wait!" Willa cried out.

The heavy steel door sealed shut before she could say another word.

The elevator dropped rapidly. Inside the enclosed space, Willa stood with her hand resting on Titan’s trembling, muscular back. She could hear the faint, muffled thuds of heavy gunfire echoing down the shaft—a terrifying symphony of automatic weapons and shattering glass.

Her mind was a chaotic storm. She had known Jared Kensington for less than a week. He was a ruthless underworld kingpin, a man who controlled millions through fear and force. Yet, when danger came, his first and only instinct had been to place his body between her and the bullets.

He protected me, she realized, tears pricking her eyes. No one has ever protected me before.

Five minutes felt like five agonizing hours.

The elevator finally shuddered to a halt. The steel doors opened onto a high-tech underground bunker filled with security monitors, medical supplies, and weapons racks.

On the central surveillance screens, Willa watched in breathless awe as the battle above unfolded.

The Moretti hitmen had breached the penthouse living room, but they had walked into a slaughterhouse. Jared and his elite security force moved through the shadows with lethal precision. Jared didn't hide; he commanded the space like a ghost, dropping men with single, terrifyingly accurate shots, his face completely calm, an absolute shadow of death.

Within ten minutes, the gunfire stopped. The penthouse living room was ruined—shattered glass and bullet-pocked walls—but every single intruder lay disarmed or neutralized on the floor.

Jared stood near the center of the room, reloading his sidearm, his shirt sleeves stained with gunpowder. He looked up directly into one of the security cameras.

He knew she was watching.

He spoke one word toward the lens, his lips forming the shape clearly:

"Safe."
