Chapter 5 - The ReckoningBreaking the ChainThe stone courtyard behind the main mansion was surrounded by high ivy-covered walls. Four heavily armed Syndicate guards stood silently at the exits.

In the center of the courtyard, kneeling on the cold flagstones, was Brendan Vance.
He looked unkempt, his hair greasy, his clothes rumpled and stained. He had the sharp, twitchy posture of a man consumed by obsession and control. When the heavy wooden doors of the courtyard opened, Brendan looked up, a wild, angry glare in his eyes.
Jared walked out first, towering, imposing, his hands tucked into his trousers. Beside him walked Willa. Titan paced closely at her left side, his massive head held high, his silver eyes locked on the intruder with a low, vibrating rumble in his chest.
When Brendan saw Willa, his face contorted into a disgusting, familiar sneer of ownership.
"Willa!" Brendan yelled, trying to stand up, but a guard pressed a heavy hand onto his shoulder, keeping him on his knees. "There you are! What is this?! Who are these people?! Get over here right now!"
Willa flinched instinctively at the loud, commanding bark of his voice—the exact tone he had used before every blow, before every night he locked her in the dark.
She stopped five feet away. Her body trembled violently.
Jared stepped closer to Brendan, looking down at him as if he were a bug beneath his boot.
"You're Brendan," Jared said, his voice smooth, devoid of any anger, which made it ten times more terrifying.
"Who the hell are you?!" Brendan spat, glaring at Jared. "She’s my fiancée! She ran away with my money! Willa, tell him! Tell him you're coming home with me right now or I swear to God I'll—"
BANG!
Jared didn't draw a gun. He simply stepped forward and kicked Brendan squarely in the chest.
The force of the blow sent Brendan flying backward onto the hard flagstones, coughing violently, gasping for air as he clutched his cracked ribs.
"Speak to her in that tone again," Jared whispered, leaning down, his dark eyes inches from Brendan’s panicked face, "and I will cut your tongue from your mouth and feed it to the dog."
Brendan stared at Jared, the reality of his situation finally crashing through his thick wall of arrogance. He looked at the armed guards, at the massive 150-pound Mastiff growling at him, and finally at the man whose face was known in every dark corner of the state.
"You're... you're Jared Kensington," Brendan whimpered, his voice shrinking into a high-pitched squeak.
"I am," Jared said coldly, standing up and wiping his shoe. "And the woman you abused, the woman you stalked, the woman you made feel small for two years... is under my absolute protection."
Jared turned to Willa, stepping back to stand beside her.
"He is on his knees, Willa," Jared said softly to her. "He will never raise his hand to you again. He will never speak your name again. Tell him what you want to say."
Willa looked down at Brendan—the man who had made her feel like nothing, the man who had driven her into hiding in dark clinics, making her mop floors in fear. Seeing him now, bruised, weeping on the cold stone, stripped of his pathetic power, something broke inside her heart.
The fear melted away. In its place remained only a profound, liberating clarity.
Willa took a step forward, looking down at him with an expression of quiet, cool detachment.
"I don't hate you, Brendan," Willa said, her voice completely steady, echoing clearly across the courtyard. "Because hating you would mean you still matter to me. You are nothing to me. You are a ghost from a life I’ve already left behind."
She turned her back on him, refusing to give him another second of her attention.
"Jared," she said softly. "Send him away."
Jared looked at her, his eyes shining with intense pride and admiration. He turned back to Miles.

"Put him on a boat to Alaska," Jared ordered coldly. "If he ever steps foot in the state of New York again, drop him in the ocean."
"Right away, Boss," Miles said, pulling Brendan up by his collar as the guards dragged him screaming out of the courtyard.
